Cali Bowl

Met up with Ying for a hang out sesh today 'cause we haven't seen each other in months, so we decided to get some take out poke bowls from Poke Guys for dinner. My choice? A Cali Bowl with white rice, classic shoyu salmon and tuna, avocado, crab meat slaw, fish roe, fried onions, seaweed, sesame seeds, and tempura bits. I also added edamame, jalapeño slices, and creamy togarashi sauce to mine as well 'cause I was feeling sassy today. 💁🏻‍♀️

Had a delicious tuna + salmon poke bowl with avocado, cucumbers, seaweed salad, rice, and creamy wasabi dressing for a super-early dinner at Komeya Cafe. As Ontario health officials are urging restaurants and bars to temporarily close their doors by midnight tonight, this might actually be my last meal eaten out for the next month. At least I made it count.

Early dinner with Chelsea at Poke Guys. It was my first time there, so I got the signature "PG's Bowl," which has white rice, classic shoyu salmon, masago, edamame, seaweed salad, corn, fried onion, pickled red ginger, and sesame seeds. I got both ginger yuzu mayo and classic shoyu as my dressings because I couldn't decide, and also added avocado, spicy seaweed salad, and jalapeños. All the ingredients are really fresh and I love the amount of customizability, and my bowl (I got the regular size, Chelsea got the large) was surprisingly super-filling. The combination of all the ingredients in my bowl made for a healthy but really tasty meal. This place is also insanely busy (literally two minutes after we sat at a table, there was a massive line-up going out the door) so clearly it's a place that is well-loved. That having been said, after adding the extra "premium" toppings (avocado and spicy seaweed salad cost $1.25 each) and adding a Diet Coke, my bill came to just over $18. And considering that it's food court-style (you order and then find a table on your own, so there's no servers), it's a pretty pricey meal for what it is. Will definitely come back when I want a good quality poke bowl, but it won't be a regular occurrence.

I was too lazy to pack lunch today, so when I was on my break today, I decided to try something I have never tried before: a poke bowl. I know, it's crazy, right? It's been such a big food trend over the last few years here and I had yet to try it. I shocked even myself. So today, I decided on the tuna and salmon poke bowl from YOi Japanese Eatery. The sashimi is tossed in soy sauce and sesame oil, and comes with lettuce, avocado, tempura bits, and nori drizzled with spicy mayo on a bed of rice. It's not authentic in the least, and it's pretty pricey at about $13, but it's really tasty and doesn't give me serious itis afterwards so it might just be my new treat day lunch favourite.
