This week's Thursday Threes:

The last 3 things I ate:
  • Two clementines
  • Turkey sandwich with cucumber for lunch
  • Rye toast with butter and ham for breakfast

The last 3 things I did:
  • Ate clementines
  • Had a smoke
  • Took a shower

The last 3 purchases I made:
  • Three packs of cigarettes (the more I buy at once, the less I have to go out)
  • Some skincare items from Sephora (it's the VIB sale right now)
  • Way too much BTS Map of the Soul Tour merch (just because their tour is postponed, it doesn't mean their merch release is)

The last 3 things I watched:

  • My Strange Hero — Started a new K-drama. It's a revenge story based in a high school long after the main characters have left said school. The main female character (played by Jo Bo Ah) is annoying, but the story overall is pretty interesting so far. Plus, I like Yoo Seung Ho.

  • Forest — Gave up on this. Made it to Episode 8. The plot is convoluted, the flow isn't smooth, and there's no chemistry between the two main leads, who also have insufferable personalities.

  • When the Weather is Fine — It has a fairly slow pace, but for some reason, I'm not mad at it. It's about life and relationships that bloom in a small town, but the story also touches on abandonment, abuse, bullying, suicide, murder, and depression. Not a must-watch, but I do find the storyline unique and there's just enough suspense to make me want to keep watching it. The series finale was released this week, so we'll see how everything concludes.

This week's Thursday Threes:

The last 3 things I ate:
  • Cream of mushroom fettuccine for dinner
  • Turkey sandwich with cucumber for lunch
  • Toasted whole wheat bagel with cream cheese for breakfast

The last 3 things I did:
  • Texted my friend Maegan
  • WhatsApp chat with my friends Viv and Amanda
  • Messaged my friend Ronsee back on Instagram

The last 3 purchases I made:
  • Korean-style macarons from The Social Blend (to be delivered for Saturday!)
  • A ton of random Korean beauty stuff from YesStyle.com
  • An assortment of BTS/BT21 merch that I've accumulated over the last 2 months from Jaewon

The last 3 things I watched:

  • Forest — I started this K-drama 'cause it kept popping up on "most popular" lists, but I'm already on Episode 7 and it's still pretty tedious to watch. The plot is convoluted, the flow isn't smooth, and there's no real chemistry between the two main leads, who also have insufferable personalities. I might give it another episode to see if it redeems itself, but I may end up giving up on this one. On another note, Jo Bo Ah (who plays the female lead) totally looks like the Korean version of Tegan and Sara (a touch more like Sara, if we're gonna nit-pick) and I can't un-see it.

  • Crash Landing on You — Decided to watch this one because there was so much hype around it. It started off kinda tedious and the main female character was annoying as fuck for like, the first half of the series, but the story did get exponentially better about four episodes in, and that's when I got hooked and binge-watched six episodes in one day. It's a totally unbelievable story set in a very realistic, very harsh world, but that's kind of its charm. The two main leads have amazing chemistry together, and the supporting actors were all amazing in it. 8/10.

Not a must-watch, but I do find the storyline unique and there's just enough suspense to make me want to keep watching it.

  • Itaewon Class — Officially in my Top 3 favourite K-dramas. An amazing, well-rounded storyline with some truly fantastic actors (including my fave, Park Seo Joon). It's a story about revenge, crime, perseverance, survival, loyalty, ambition, human nature, friendship, and love. I also really appreciate that it calls out racism, discrimination, prejudice, and the corrupt justice system in Korea. I give it a 9.5/10. I took a half-point off because I just didn't think Park Seo Joon and Kim Da Mi had any chemistry together, and any romantic interactions they had with each other honestly felt kind of forced and was rather cringe-worthy. Every other aspect of this story, though, was perfect to me. I've been recommending it to everyone.

This week's Thursday Threes:

The last 3 things I ate:
  • Strawberries and an almond honey cookie for dessert
  • Rice noodles with chicken, bok choy, and onions tossed in sesame oil and soy sauce for dinner
  • A smoked turkey sandwich with pickled hot banana peppers on rye; a garden salad with cucumber, tomato, and avocado; and a clementine for lunch

The last 3 things I did:
  • Had a smoke
  • Ate dinner
  • Cancelled my Airbnb (we had booked one near the Rogers Centre since the BTS concerts were scheduled to be held there in May and it would be way easier to stay nearby the venue for that weekend, but all North American dates for the Map of the Soul Tour are now postponed)

  • Itaewon Class — Finished the last episode a few days ago. It is officially in my Top 3 favourite K-dramas.

  • What's Wrong with Secretary Kim? — Since I'm in quarantine, I decided to re-watch this because it's my favourite rom-com K-drama and I needed something more cheerful. Park Seo Joon and Park Min Young are so good together.

  • When the Weather is Fine — I'm a sucker for Park Min Young in romance K-dramas and also loved Seo Kang Joon in Cheese in the Trap (to me, he was the best part of an otherwise mediocre K-drama), so I started this one. It's a little slow-going, but it features the minutiae of small-town life which I love (it's one of the reasons why I fell in love with Gilmore Girls) and I do like the chemistry between the two leads, plus the storyline is pretty unique considering it's a romance drama. We're only half-way through, though, so we'll see what happens. Sadly, I've binge-watched all eight episodes so I have to wait until next week for the new one.

  • The Joker — Joaquin Phoenix. Holy shit.
  • Parasite — I'd been meaning to watch this for months. After it won Best Picture last week, I was like, "I can't put this off any longer." I honestly didn't know what it was about going into it because I didn't read any synopses or plot summaries or spoilers, but this film honestly blew me away. It was like nothing I would have expected. So, so well-written, with a fantastically twisted plot, and supremely-well acted by a very talented ensemble cast. It's smart, it's funny, and it's dark as hell.
  • Itaewon Class — Just finished Episode 4. It is excellent. The last two K-dramas I watched were pretty fucking awful, so I really needed one with a good storyline and great acting that wasn't comically predictable or cliché. I pretty much watch all the K-dramas that Park Seo Joon is in, but this might be my favourite one so far. I was literally sobbing during the first episode.

  • Sense8 — Yes, I'm finally watching Sense8. I'm on Episode 11 of Season 1, and it is totally living up to its reputation. The pilot is confusing at first but the story really gets going about 20 minutes later, and the next thing you know, you've sat on the couch for five hours straight because you can't not binge-watch this show. Beautifully written, acted, and directed, and one of the most unique premises for a show I've ever seen. Incredible characters and storylines, and the cinematography is absolutely stunning. I also love that the show represents so many different ethnicities, cultures, identities, genders, and religions. My fave, though, has got to be Sun, who is straight-up one of the most bad-ass characters on TV.
  • To The Bone — The performances are excellent, and the movie shines a spotlight on a subject that isn't really explored in mainstream media. Overall, I think it does a good job on educating people on anorexia without being too dry, sensitive, or disrespectful. But I felt that it didn't really get into the psyche of any of the characters, and some of the story gets too unfocused. It veers into a romance that seems forced and uncomfortable to watch. The movie is a snapshot of a girl struggling with anorexia, but there is no resolution here; there are no suggestions for healing, no hope for getting better. And Lily Collins' character is just unlikeable and unrelatable. Her character says she wants to get better and is thus put in her fifth treatment centre, but doesn't do a damn thing to prove it. There's just something missing in this conversation, and it gets frustrating to watch.
  • Riverdale — Of course it has to end on a fucking cliffhanger. Just two and a half weeks before the Season 2 premiere.

  • Atomic Blonde — Charlize Theron. James McAvoy. Kickassery. What more do you need?
  • Sense8 — I've been saying that I need to watch this for over a year. People have been telling me it's one of the best shows they've ever watched. Now that all the episodes have been released (it's been announced that it's canceled), I really need to hunker down and start it.
  • Stranger Things — Again, I've been saying I need to watch this for the better part of a year. It's been announced that Season 2 premieres on October 27, so at least I have some time to catch up. Man, Netflix has been on fire with their original series this past year.

  • Wonder Woman — I went in without any expectations and without reading any reviews or seeing any ratings. And I was blown away. Honestly, it's probably the best superhero movie I've ever seen and definitely my favourite superhero origin story. Absolutely stunning visuals, amazing plot (I actually didn't know a lot about Wonder Woman, and I was fascinated to learn that Greek mythology plays such a big role in her story), well-directed, well-written, and surprisingly well-acted. I didn't know who Gal Gadot was, but I'm so glad they cast her (as it turns out, she's quite bad ass in real life, too). She's phenomenal as Wonder Woman and I'm surprised that it took her this long to get a lead role. Also, she is fit AF.
  • iZombie — I'm kind of obsessed with Blaine. David Anders is so, so good in antagonist roles (e.g. Sark in Alias, Adam Monroe in Heroes, John Gilbert in The Vampire Diaries, Frankenstein/Dr. Whale on Once Upon a Time).
  • Riverdale Holy, plot twist! Can't believe we have to wait until October for Season 2. Arrrggghhhh.

  • iZombie — I'm all caught up on Season 3 which started a few weeks ago. The episode where Major is on teenage girl brain has been the highlight of my week.
  • Riverdale — I just binge-watched the last three episodes. Jughead's still my favourite (I kinda have a mini crush on him, not gonna lie), but I'm surprised how much I love Veronica on this show considering how annoying she is in the comics. I'm also really glad that they ended the Archie/Valerie relationship; it was one of the most awkward, unnatural things to watch, and I think even the writers probably wanted to retract the idea the moment it first aired. Oh, and I gotta say, Cheryl Blossom has become one of the best villains in a teen TV drama since Blair Waldorf on Gossip Girl.
  • The F Word — Actually really, really good. It's an indie rom-com with random, quirky characters and happenstances that reminds me somewhat of (500) Days of Summer. I bought this on a whim 'cause it was on sale on Amazon so I didn't really know what to expect, but Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan have amazing chemistry together, and though the storyline was somewhat predictable, it was real and witty and funny. As it turns out, Daniel Radcliffe's potential as an actor doesn't start and end with Harry Potter. Plus, it was kinda cool to see a movie not just filmed in Toronto, but actually set in Toronto, too. The real highlight for me in this film, though, is Adam Driver's character, Allan. I swear, every line that came out of his mouth was gold and I almost died laughing.

  • iZombie — This show is now on Netflix, so I finally got to finish Season 2. It's one of my favourite new shows. Quirky, original, mysterious, and funny. Rob Thomas has won my heart since Veronica Mars, so I knew this show was going to be great (and actually, a lot of the actors in Veronica Mars make appearances in iZombie). And it is. I cannot wait until Season 3 (premieres in two weeks!).
  • Get Out— Thought-provoking with a unique plot, good pacing, unexpected twists, and great suspense build-ups, while not so subtly addressing the racial issues in American society. I wouldn't watch it again, but it is definitely worth watching.
  • Me Before You — Pretty loyal to the book, actually, but lacks a lot of the emotional subtleties that the book has. Basically, the movie was sad, but the book was heart-wrenching. And the ending seemed too rushed and was tied up too neatly, when the subject matter is so controversial and complex. That aside... Sam Claflin is hot.

  • Beauty and the Beast (2017) — Took long enough for Disney to finally come out with a live-action version. Beauty and the Beast was the first Disney movie I ever watched, so it holds a special place in my heart. I went through a phase when I was a kid where I re-watched it on VHS every single day for three months. The soundtrack is also my favourite out of all the Disney animated movies. Plus, Emma Watson is in it, and Stephen Chbosky (the author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, one of my favourite books of all time) co-wrote the screenplay. It's gonna be a good fucking time.
  • Before I FallI read the book several years ago and really enjoyed it so I'm interested in seeing how it translated to film. It's like a YA version of Groundhog Day.
  • Song to Song — Okay, no one's talked about this film and I haven't even seen a trailer for it, but the plot sounds awesome, the cast is phenomenal (hi, Ryan Gosling), and the bands featured are amazing (Iggy Pop, Black Lips, Iron & Wine, Arcade Fire, etc.).

The next 3 things I want to watch:

Article ImageArticle ImageArticle Image
  • Episode 4 of Riverdale — Obsessed. Not just because I grew up with Archie Comics and the world of Riverdale makes me nostalgic, but because this new version is so twisted and so dark. Definitely my new favourite show this year. My only annoyance now is that I have to wait for a new episode every week so I can't binge-watch it.
  • Episode 8 of ShadowhuntersMy guilty pleasure; I like that they're taking more liberalities this season from the original books, but still keeping in line with the Mortal Instruments universe. Also, the television version of Clary doesn't annoy me nearly as much as the book version of Clary, which is maybe why I haven't stopped watching it yet.
  • Fifty Shades Darker — Judge if you will, but I actually wanna watch this. It has terrible ratings (seriously, 8% on Rotten Tomatoes), but I like the plot of the second and third novels (despite how terribly written they are; I mean, there are only so many times one can use the word "heady") and want to see how they translated them on to film. Plus, Jamie Dornan is hot.

Thursday Threes: Vol. 2

on
Thursday, January 26, 2017
I was reading Liz's post a couple weeks ago, which featured her latest "threes" (e.g. the last three things she ate, read, bought, etc.), and thought it was a great idea for a weekly blog segment, kind of like a little snapshot of what's going on in life. (There are only so many beauty reviews I can post in one week. I want to add a little more variety here. Plus, I do work full time, and beauty reviews are time-consuming.) I've decided to do this on Thursdays, 'cause I've realized that I very rarely post anything on Thursdays, and also because I can call this Thursday Threes (you know, the power of alliteration and whatnot). So, here are this week's Thursday Threes:

The last 3 things I ate:
  • Crispy Cantonese chow mein
  • Fried chili turnip patties
  • Chinese broccoli

The last 3 things I did:
  • Took a shower
  • Had dinner at Congee Queen
  • Picked up my mom from the airport

The last 3 purchases I made:

The next 3 things I want to watch:

  • MAC Liptensity Lipstick in Doe

3 things that are sitting closest to me right now:

3 things I'm currently wearing:
  • A faded light pink Disneyland California shirt from our trip there in 1990 (I used to wear this as a nightgown when I was a kid so now it's an oversized shirt)
  • Black sweatpants from Uniqlo
  • My Ray-Ban glasses

3 things I want to accomplish today:
  • Do a load of laundry for my black clothes
  • Finish the current book I'm reading

Thursday Threes: Vol. 1

I was reading Liz's post, which featured her latest "threes" (e.g. the last three things she ate, read, bought, etc.), and thought it was a great idea for a weekly blog segment, kind of like a little snapshot of what's going on in life. So, here's my first one, and hopefully, I'll be good about doing it weekly.

The last 3 things I ate:
  • White toast
  • A banana
  • Plain congee
(Yeah, it's been a boring day, food-wise. I've had food poisoning so I need to eat clean.)

The last 3 things I did:
  • Have a cigarette
  • Drink ginger ale
  • Put hand cream on

The last 3 purchases I made:

The last 3 things I watched:

  • The latest two episodes of Shadowhunters: Season 2 — It's a guilty pleasure, okay? I like to watch it when I'm doing my nails.
  • La La Land — I watched this just after Christmas and it was so much more than I expected. Even the guys I went to see it with enjoyed it, and trust me, they're not musical-romantic-comedy people. I originally wanted to watch it 'cause hi, Ryan Gosling's in it, and I am loyal AF. Musicals can get really boring really fast, but this one was beautifully done: whimsical, nostalgic, mostly sweet but a little cynical. The singing and dancing intertwine with the storyline at a good pace, so those who don't really like musicals can still get into it. The plot starts off very happy-go-lucky and head-in-the-clouds but ends up being much deeper and bittersweet. The songs are well-written and emotional but catchy. Ryan and Emma are beautiful, and their on-screen chemistry is a joy to watch. Honestly, I kept talking about it for days after I watched it. All those Golden Globe wins are really well-deserved.
  • Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life — I've only re-watched it once. So far.

The last 3 songs I played:
  • Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise
  • DMX - Ruff Ryders' Anthem
  • Lauryn Hill - Everything is Everything
(I'm listening to my '90s hip hop playlist.)

The last 3 apps I used on my phone:
