Jungkook — "Falling" (Harry Styles Cover)

on
Thursday, October 28, 2021

Another reason why Jeon Jungkook is the main vocalist of BTS. I've always been pretty indifferent to Harry Styles, but the magic of JK is that he can make you appreciate songs that you would never otherwise have listened to by yourself. And this cover is fucking beautiful. Jungkook consistently shows us the versatility, range, and strength of his voice. It's pure magic.

What a wonderful gift to give us just out of the blue. I'm gonna consider it an early birthday present.

BTS on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge: "Dynamite," "Permission to Dance," and "I'll Be Missing You" (Puff Daddy, Faith Evans, and 112 Cover)

WOW. THE VOCALS. THE AD LIBS. THE HARMONIES. THE LIVE BAND. And that cover?!?! I was absolutely not expecting that. "I'll Be Missing You" is one of my favourite songs from the '90s, and I remember watching the music video for it over and over and over again because it was played on MuchMusic literally every hour. I remember watching the news when Notorious B.I.G. died and how devastating that was to the music industry. This song will forever be in memory of Biggie, and BTS did such a beautiful, respectful cover of it. The vocal line absolutely nailed Faith Evans' parts (my god, the falsetto harmonies are stunning), and I love that the rap line added their lyrics in Korean to pay homage to the meaning of the song in a language that they can express themselves the best. While I am obviously BTS-biased, they are actually one of the few groups who can cover this song with such a range in rappers and vocalists. They did a truly amazing job.

Thank you for this, BTS.

BTS on Glamour: BTS Watches Fan Covers on YouTube

So I've watched reaction videos to BTS for years, but it's totally surreal to watch BTS reacting to other people. Especially Cameron Philip (who I am actually subscribed to; he's a fellow Canadian ARMY and lives about two hours from me) and the metal cover of "Fake Love" (which I originally posted about here two years ago!), which I've watched multiple times. Just comes to show... BTS SEES YOU ALL. (Also, how much do I love Jungkook's inner screamo kid jumping out?)

JUNGKOOK - 10,000 Hours (Cover)

Jungkook gave us a sneak peek of this song on Twitter yesterday (which he promptly deleted because the tweet said "Twitter for iPhone" and BTS are ambassadors for Samsung... whoops) and actually surprised us by releasing it on SoundCloud today! Quite frankly, this is the only way I'd ever listen to a Shay + Dan/Justin Bieber song.

JUNGKOOK — Ending Scene (이런 엔딩)

Ah, do these boys ever take a rest? First, we got Jimin's "Promise" a few weeks ago, then we got Yoongi's feature in Lee Sora's "Song Request" yesterday, and now Kookie has released not one, but two versions of his cover of IU's "Ending Scene." (He did tweet a clip of him covering this song last month, but we didn't know if he would actually release a full version of it. As it turns out, he did two because, you know, Kookie is the Golden Maknae and he's always in overachiever mode.) Kookie's vocal colour is unprecedented in my opinion. RM used to say that Kookie is an amazing singer with great range and breath control, but he needed to work on the depth and emotion of his voice. And, at 21, I genuinely think that he's aced it. When he sings, I find that his voice portrays emotion so well that it can paint a picture of the exact feeling and sentiment behind the song. (When he sings the first "But I still want you" in "The Truth Untold," it literally brings people to tears.) Main vocalist, indeed.
