Pick-Ups & Deliveries: Haul No. 64

on
Tuesday, April 4, 2017
Welcome to April! Despite snowing last week, it's finally starting to feel a bit like spring now (the forecast for the next three days is just copious amounts of rain). It's been a minute since I made a real post here, but I've been crazy busy with work and interviews and making business plans, and I'm just generally exhausted all the time, so I've been putting blogging on the back burner. But my hard work has paid off because I got promoted last week! And I can relax a little bit until I officially start in my new position later this month, hence my first real post in over two weeks. I consciously didn't do a haul post for February because I didn't really buy all that much, so I decided I would do a cumulative haul for both February and March. As it turns out, I really made up for my lack of shopping in February last month because I somehow ended up with ten eyeshadow palettes. (Like, what the actual fuck? I am out of control.) As always, my latest haul started at the evil empire that is Sephora.

Too Faced Natural Love Ultimate Neutral Eyeshadow Collection

My friend picked up a few things for me with her discount at Sephora over the past couple months, which started with the preview sale of the super-hyped, ultra-coveted Anastasia Beverly Hills Nicole Guerriero Glow Kit back in February. I'll most likely post a review about it next week (I don't know how relevant it still is, actually, since it's always sold out at Sephora and it's limited edition), but all you gotta know is: I've been using it every single day straight for the last month. (Yeah, it's that good.) As I was on a highlighter kick, I also got a couple of the new Too Faced Love Light Prismatic Highlighters, because they are the cutest things I have ever seen and I would have bought them for the packaging alone. I originally wanted all three shades, but the lightest one, Blinded by the Light, is sold out everywhere right now so I'll have to pick it up when it's back in stock — assuming I like the formula. So far, the formula has gotten less than stellar reviews because the finish of these isn't ultra-pigmented, in-your-face, and bright-as-fuck. But I don't think that's a fair assessment because not all highlighters have to be that way to look amazing, so I'm going to try them out for a few days and give them a good trial before writing up a review for them. On that note, Too Faced also came out with a gorgeous new neutral eyeshadow palette called Natural Love for spring, and while I definitely don't need another neutral palette, this one was just too cute to resist — and it's the first palette from Too Faced that contains a whopping 30 shades, and... I'm just a sucker, okay?

Stellar* Limitless Concealer in S01 and Deciem Hylamide Matte 12

Circuits of Fever
Commodity Mimosa Eau de Parfum

After wanting to try Toronto-based skincare brand Deciem for a while now, I decided to start out with a tube of Hylamide Matte 12. I have been looking for a truly mattifying primer that blurs and smooths texture but also doesn't dry out skin or ball up under powder foundation, and I really thought this was an impossible feat... until I found this. It has a thicker consistency than I typically like, but it really works. It feels comfortable on, makes my skin look ultra smooth, and keeps me matte for at least six hours before needing to blot (I would typically have to blot after three hours). And for $25, it is also one of the most affordable primers at a prestige cosmetics level. I gotta say, it's holy grail status. (As it turns out, the Pixi one that I picked up in January? I'm totally allergic to it. Like, angry red bumps all over. Into the trash can it goes.) I also picked up a tube of concealer from a new Canadian makeup line at Sephora called Stellar*, which focuses on the medium skintones of "Hispanic, Latino, Afro-American, Aboriginal, Chinese, Filipino, Middle-Eastern, and Indian women." While I don't necessarily care for brands that only focus on people of colour (makeup brands should cater to everyone, not just one demographic), I was intrigued by the formulations of some of these products, namely the Limitless Concealer, which has been compared to Urban Decay's Naked Concealer for its lightweight, creaseless, full coverage formula. So I picked up the lightest shade, which is somewhere in between an NC25 to NC30 at MAC. Been using the concealer for a week so far, and have been loving it. It blends out beautifully, doesn't feel heavy, covers redness and freckles, wears well for a full day, and matches my skintone. Actually worth checking out if you have a medium to medium-deep complexion. Finally, I picked up a perfume that I'd been eyeing since last year: Commodity's Mimosa. It's fresh and crisp and smells like oranges. Perfect for spring and summer.

theBalm Balm Beach Long-Wearing Blush

Last month, theBalm was having a 50% off sitewide sale. Now, I usually ignore their sales because their shipping to Canada is expensive and I didn't know what kind of duties I might be charged upon arrival. But then I figured that even with the currency conversion, shipping rates, and any applicable duties and taxes, I'd still be saving money than buying their products full price here. (Yes, that's how much theBalm's products are marked up in Canada.) So I stocked up on all the things I'd been eyeing over the last year: the theBalm AppĂ©tit, Meet Matt(e) Trimony, and Nude Dude eyeshadow palettes; both Cindy-Lou Manizer and Mary-Lou Manizer highlighters; and the new Balm Beach blush. And guess what? No taxes or duties! Don't know if this was a fluke or not, but hey, I'll take it.

MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ Sized to Go in Lavender (x3) and Coconut (x3)

I'll be the first to admit that I went overboard in the eyeshadow palette department last month, but everyone's slaying the palette game right now and I am being tempted left, right, and centre. I had gotten a notification that Morphe's ultra-coveted, limited edition Copper Spice and Bronzed Mocha palettes were finally back in stock on their site — and on sale in a bundle set for $33.98 USD. Plus, I had a discount code for an extra 10% off. I couldn't resist. Even with the shipping price (which was literally half of the total cost of my purchase) and the currency conversion, the two palettes were still an absolute steal. And I gotta say, I really prefer the square palettes with clear lids. That's actually one thing I don't like about Morphe's 35-pan palettes — I have to open each one to find the one I'm looking for because they all look the same on the outside. I overlook this inconvenience because their value is incredible and the quality is amazing, but still, I hope their future palettes will feature clear lids. And on that note, MAC released their Eyes on MAC anniversary collection in early March, so I picked up the new In the Flesh 15-pan palette, plus four of the new small nine-pan palettes: Solar Glow, Tropic Cool, Red-Hot, and Semi-Sweet. Their big spring collection, Work It Out, was released on the same day, but nothing from it caught my eye except for the mini scented Fix+ sprays, so I picked up three in Coconut and Lavender. I really wish they had re-released them in full-size bottles and brought back the Yuzu scent as well, but alas, no such luck.

Vasanti Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator Exfolating Cleanser, Biotherm Life Plankton Sensitive Emulsion, and Biotherm Aquasource Everplump Moisturizing Treatment

Circuits of Fever
Biotherm Aquasource Gel Set, Biotherm Aquasource Deep Serum Set, and LancĂ´me Ă‰nergie de Vie Daily Milky Lotion

I did stock up on some skincare, too, you know, to balance out the excess of makeup. I was with my mom at Shoppers Drug Mart a few weeks ago during Seniors Day; as a senior, she gets 20% off, so I asked her to pick up a few things for me as well. I was looking for a new exfoliator, and the awesome beauty advisor that was helping me that day introduced me to Vasanti's Brighten Up! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator. Vasanti is a brand that I typically overlook, not because they're not any good, but because no one ever talks about them. The beauty advisor told me that this specific exfoliator completely changed her skin — more than the offerings from any of the other brands carried at Shoppers (and that includes some big names from Shiseido to LancĂ´me). She took the time to demo it on my hand and show me how to use it, and I was sold. I've been using it for a few weeks now, and I've noticed how much smoother, brighter, and clearer my skin is. I see more of a difference with this exfoliator than much more expensive ones, including my previous holy grail. Consider me converted. While I was there, I also picked up a couple of Biotherm products: the new Life Plankton Sensitive Emulsion as a serum to help with hydration, redness, and sensitivity; and the new Aquasource Everplump Moisturizer as a night-time moisturizer. Of course, I also got an invitation to the L'OrĂ©al warehouse sale, which I was totally going to skip because I had just bought a new serum and a new moisturizer... but then I decided, what the hell, I'll just check it out for fun. And came out 30 minutes later with a Biotherm Aquasource Gel set for $30 from $50, a Biotherm Aquasource Deep Serum set for $37 from $62, and a LancĂ´me Énergie de Vie Energizing Daily Milky Lotion for $40 from $67. So, yeah, I'm set for skincare until next winter...

Kate Spade Liberty Street Ice Pop Stacy Wallet

Finally, in some non-cosmetics shopping, the Kate Spade outlet store at Vaughan Mills had brought in an insanely adorable line of accessories last month featuring ice cream and popsicle prints that I had to get in on. It's funny because I don't really care for Kate Spade's purses, but I love their wallets. There were two especially that caught my eye: an aqua-coloured zip-around wallet with a double-scoop ice cream appliquĂ©, and a cream-coloured snap wallet with a watercolour ice cream and popsicle print. The store was having a 60% off sale with an extra 25% off, and I have a friend who works there who gets another 30% discount on top of that, and so basically, I got both of them for $80. Easily the best deal from my haul. On that note, though, I can't even think about buying another wallet for the next two years.

Pick-Ups & Deliveries: June 2015

on
Wednesday, July 1, 2015
Happy Canada Day! I can't believe it's already July. No, seriously, I've been so busy with work and freelance (tons of weddings right now) that May and June have been a complete and total blur, with only Instagram posts as a reminder of things I've done (e.g. eaten). And on that note, I've been kinda absent from this blog because I've been spending a lot more of my free time socializing (a.k.a. eating all the things) with friends. Over the winter, I spent so much time by myself indoors (which I love, lest you think I'm a sad hermit) that I forgot what it was like to just... hang out. Not that I don't love the Internet, mind you, but I've found myself not going on my laptop for two or three days in a row at a time, and it's kind of refreshing. Anyway, back to the point of this post: the beginning of a new month means last month's haul! I feel like I just did one of these posts, so sometimes I wonder how I found time to do all this shopping, but you'll be surprised to know that I actually did more non-beauty shopping this month (aren't you proud of me?)!

Gucci GG 3166/S Sunglasses

I'm not usually a huge fan of outlet mall shopping because I find that either the deals aren't that great or the styles aren't to my taste, but I found myself going to not one, but two outlet malls last month. I went with Vivian to the Toronto Premium Outlets in Halton Hills, and aside from picking up some chocolate at the Lindt outlet, we managed to find some fun new accessories for summer at Kate Spade. Everything in the store was 50% off, so I snatched up a wristlet in a mint green colour, a snap wallet in a bright chartreuse yellow, and a cute new phone case (it has toucans on it!). Then on a trip to Buffalo with my mom, we stopped by the Fashion Outlets in Niagara Falls, where Solstice Sunglass Outlet was having a designer sunglasses sale, so I finally decided to retire my old Dior ones (by "retire," I mean "give my mom") and got a new pair of Gucci ones that are slightly bigger and more modern (and don't hit my eyelashes!) for 30% off. I figure if I only buy one pair of sunglasses every five years, it's okay to splurge on a fancier designer pair. Cost per use, right?

Wilfred Meryon Blouse and Aritzia Scented Candle in Baies Noires

Aritzia was having their semi-annual private sale (called "Clientèle") a couple weeks ago wherein everything is on sale, so I took the opportunity to stock up on some more black clothes (so I can wear them to work and to go out). I picked up a new black Chevalier jacket (my old one has a hole in the sleeve now, so I figured it was time to replace it) in a black Japanese crepe fabric, and a couple of lightweight, breezy tops to wear during the summer (and appropriate for layering all year round). And like every private sale, they offer all clients a gift with purchase, which was a luxury handmade candle from France. I picked the Baies Noires scent, which smells exactly like Diptyque's Baies, and it's same size, too. So, suck on that, Diptyque. I got this one for free.

Also, I bought two new pairs of shoes from Aldo, including my first ever pair of sandals, and some new ballet flats to replace my old Tory Burch ones (which I refuse to re-buy because they are totally not worth $250).

MAC Fix+ in Rose, Coconut, Yuzu, and Cucumber

Okay, so you didn't expect me not to pick up any cosmetics, did you? I mean, I tried to minimize my make-up spending this month, but I'm not that good at resisting. The EstĂ©e Lauder warehouse sale took place during the first weekend of June, and while I did bypass a lot of things, I snatched up a limited edition Bobbi Brown Shimmer Brick in Tawny for $25, plus six permanent shades of Bobbi Brown eyeshadow for $12 a pop from $28 (that I put into a Bobbi Brown custom eyeshadow palette that I picked up from the Cosmetics Company Store for $12). And aside from all the Dazzleshadows I picked up from MAC's Le Disko collection (which I have reviewed here, here, and here), I also picked up four of the new scented Fix+ that MAC came out with a couple weeks ago. It's funny because I remember when MAC first launched scented Fix+ (in Lavender and Rose) several years ago, they weren't that popular and they were desperately trying to get rid of them at the warehouse sales, but people are going crazy for them now (they're already sold out online and at most locations). So if you were intrigued by them (my favourite is Yuzu, which is a fresh citrusy scent), I would see if your local MAC location still has any and snatch them up ASAP.

Clinique Foaming Sonic Facial Soap and Exfoliating Scrub

Hudson's Bay is currently offering a $10 off any $75 purchase promotion, so I snatched up the NARS Dual-Intensity Blush in Craving, plus Clinique's new Foaming Sonic Facial Soap (it was developed for their Sonic System Brush, but it works the same with a Clarisonic) and a new tube of Clinique's Exfoliating Scrub, which has become a favourite of mine (it's has the perfect amount of grit, is lightly foaming, and has a nice minty-fresh after-feel). Clinique has a new program with Hudson's Bay that started about a month ago, wherein they track all your purchases on a card and when you buy ten products, the 11th product is free (up to the average price of your previous ten purchases, so if you spent an average of $25 per product, then you can get a $25 product for free). This is a great loyalty program (and unheard of in the world of prestige cosmetics) to drive Clinique users to shop at Hudson's Bay, so if you use their skincare or are thinking of getting some of their new Cheek Pops (my favourite), then definitely head over to Bay locations to shop.

Finally, I got some fun new body products. As you might know, Bath & Body Works was having their Semi-Annual Sale, which I was totally going to ignore... but then Vivian and I went in "just to look," and I noticed that they brought Pearberry and Cucumber Melon back (my two favourite Bath & Body Works scents in middle school!). They were doing a 3 for $12 deal (and I had a 20% off coupon on top of that), so I snatched up three shower gels in Pearberry, Cucumber Melon, and Eucalyptus Mint (my favourite Bath & Body Works scent from their current line-up), and the matching body lotions. I go through body lotion like it's water, so I didn't feel too guilty for stockpiling. And at the Body Shop outlet store at Toronto Premium Outlets, they had a ton of their discontinued limited edition products on sale for $4 a pop, so I snatched up four: their soap-free shower gels in Papaya (my favourite!) and Passion Fruit, as well as their body lotions in Sweet Lemon and Harvest Raspberry. I am gonna smell like a freakin' fruit salad this summer and I'm gonna love every minute of it.

What did you buy last month? Any good deals? What are your thoughts on outlet shopping?
