New York City 2025 Travel Log: Margherita Pizza, Fried Calamari, and Fried Mozzarella-Stuffed Mushrooms at Patsy's Pizzeria

on
Thursday, March 13, 2025
On this trip to NYC, I really wanted to get some New York-style pizza. Of course, there are hundreds of pizzerias in Brooklyn alone and New Yorkers have very extreme opinions on which one is the best, but I am neither a New Yorker nor a pizza snob, so after nearly four hours of waiting to get J-Hope merch in the cold, we decided to go to the historic Patsy's Pizzeria, which is very conveniently across the street from Barclays Center.

We were quite ambitious and ordered the Margherita pie, the fried calamari, and the fried mozzarella-stuffed mushrooms. My food baby was definitely substantial afterwards, but my god, this lunch was spectacular. Not a crumb was left. (Well, Iris did leave a bit of crust left, but she did her best!) Not sure how Patsy's now ranks among New York pizzerias, but there's a reason why they've been around for nearly 100 years (and has 12 locations across NYC for your pizza-eating pleasure).

Tokyo 2024 Travel Log: Day 5 — Margherita Pizza, Diavolo Pizza, and Proscuitto & Arugula Salad at Ostrea Oyster Bar & Pizzeria

We were craving pizza, so we decided to go for dinner at Ostrea Oyster Bar & Pizzeria.

We ordered the Margherita and the Diavolo and were surprised by how good these were. (They actually use a wood-fired pizza oven. The crust had the perfect chew and the perfect amount of char and this is the type of crust that would be a CRIME to leave behind.) Didn't think I would find such delicious Italian-style pizza in Tokyo, but here we are. And lest you think we were too unhealthy, we also ordered a prosciutto and arugula salad. To keep a balanced meal, obviously.

Hong Kong 2024 Travel Log: Day 4 — Jumbo Shrimp and Seafood Flower Pizza at Pizza Hut

on
Tuesday, March 12, 2024
So one thing that both my mom and I wanted to try out here was pizza. Not authentic pizza, obviously. Chain restaurant pizza. Because the fast food pizza culture in Asia is vastly different than what we have in North America. So we went to Pizza Hut and ordered the one that sounded the most interesting: the Jumbo Shrimp and Seafood Flower Pizza.

Article Image
Jumbo Shrimp and Seafood Flower Pizza

Like its namesake, it includes shrimp and seafood, but also cream cheese, cherry tomatoes, red onions, mushrooms, and TOFU. Yes, TOFU. Like, slices of firm tofu. Maybe to add protein? To make it feel meatier? Give it some heft? I don't know, but I will say that I normally eat 5 slices of pizza to get full. Here, I only needed 3, so I guess it's doing its job. (Then again, this is more like garlic bread with toppings than pizza, so I digress.) But I wouldn't get it again. Forget about the tofu. Cream cheese on pizza is an abomination.

Tokyo 2023 Travel Log: Day 6 — Margherita Pizza Lunch Set at Pizza Salvatore Cuomo Yotsuya

on
Thursday, April 13, 2023
Carmen went for lunch with a friend who happened to be in Tokyo at the same time as us and I had declined to go because I wanted to sleep in, so I had the afternoon to myself — which, admittedly, was much needed. (As someone who spends the majority of her free time alone, being with someone 24/7 for 2 weeks can feel a bit suffocating.) As 1:00PM rolled around, I started to get hungry so I prepared myself to get some lunch. I was originally just going to get something quick at the conbini or maybe get some fast food take-out from around the corner, but I thought I would just bite the bullet and take myself out to lunch at a proper restaurant. I didn't want to walk too far, so I just decided to go to the nice pizza restaurant attached to our hotel called Pizza Salvatore Cuomo.

I got the pizza lunch set, which includes a salad, a pizza, and a drink for ¥1,320. I decided on a classic Margherita for my pizza, but knowing that Japanese portion sizes are significantly smaller than North American ones, I decided to size it up for ¥330. The salad — which included romaine, carrots, corn, and ham with a light vinaigrette — was tasty and refreshing, but it did not prepare me for the main event. Because I did not think I was going to find authentic Neapolitan pizza in Japan. BUT THEY DID IT. An amazing plush, chewy crust with just the right amount of char, and a perfect ratio of mozzarella to tomato sauce to basil. To be honest, it was even better than most of the pizzas I've had in Toronto. And though it wasn't included in the set, my server surprised me with a little cup of strawberry pannacotta for dessert, too!

Honestly, this was the first time I'd ever eaten by myself at a restaurant, and I gotta say, it was a rousing success.

Seoul 2023 Travel Log: Day 5 — Dolce Baguette, Vongole Aglio e Olio, and Avocado Shrimp Pizza at Mano di Chef

on
Wednesday, April 5, 2023
We were at Starfield COEX Mall and looking for some lunch when I randomly suggested trying Korean-style Italian food. (I say "Korean-style Italian food" because it is distinctly different from authentic Italian food.) So after doing a bit of research, we decided to go across the street to a restaurant called Mano di Chef that totally fit the bill:

Article Image
Dolce baguette

Article Image
Vongole aglio e olio

Article Image
Avocado and shrimp pizza

The Dolce baguette is quite literally garlic bread with honey drizzled on top, and it is so simple but so freaking delicious. It's the same reason why I'm so obsessed with the honey garlic pizza at Ssangkye Jjimdak — Koreans have got this honey garlic combo down pat. For our mains, we decided to share two dishes. The first was the vongole aglio e olio, which is essentially the classic garlic and olive oil spaghetti dish with clams. Light, clean, and tasty — there's a reason it's the most popular pasta dish among Koreans. Actually, out of the three items we ordered, I would consider this one to be the most authentically Italian. Then came the shrimp and avocado pizza, which I wouldn't consider pizza at all, but more like a really nice, fresh flatbread — crisp romaine salad with mozzarella, thinly-sliced tomatoes, fresh cranberries, plump shrimp, firm avocado chunks, and a drizzle of sweet vinaigrette on the thinnest of charcoal crusts. Again, really light, clean ingredients — basically a fully-loaded salad on top of flatbread — so it tasted healthy, but like, in the best way possible.

Italians would have found this an abomination, but if you think of Korean-style Italian food as its own cuisine, our meal was actually quite fantastic.

Dining Out: Margherita Pizza, Nico Pasta alla Panna, and Odessa Pasta al Sugo Pomodoro Cremoso

Had an early dinner with Iris at Grazie, where we shared one pizza and two pastas:

I hadn't been to Grazie in a few years, but the quality of food and service is just as amazing as I remember it. I've tried different dishes every single time I've been here, and I have never been disappointed with the food. The pizzas have the right amount of char and the perfect amount of chew; the pastas are always cooked perfectly al dente and come in the most delicious, rich, flavourful sauces. I'm just (pleasantly) surprised to see that their prices haven't changed, when every other restaurant has had to increase their pricing due to the pandemic and inflation. If the line-up out the door by 6:00PM is any indication, Grazie is as popular as ever to get delicious, authentic, and reasonably priced Italian food. Indeed, when you want good Italian food, you go where the Italians go.

Dining Out: Margherita Pizza, Homemade Pesto Gnocchi, Duck Confit Ravioli, and Pistachio Tiramisu Millefoglie at Mattarello

on
Sunday, September 25, 2022
Went to check out newly-opened Italian restaurant Mattarello with my friend Carmen yesterday for an early dinner. We decided to share one pizza, two pastas, and a dessert:

Article Image
Margherita Pizza

Okay, let's begin with the pizza. We decided on the Margherita because every good Italian restaurant should do a great Margherita and also because we knew that this was going to be our appetizer, so we didn't want to get one of the heavier pizza options. The Margherita here is good, but not great, and the problem lies in the crust. It has proper charring on the bottom, which is excellent, but the texture of the crust is way too hard. It was so tough, in fact, that our knives couldn't even cut through it and I ended up having to eat it by hand. (Sorry, Italians.) The flavours were great, as a Margherita should be, with a nicely seasoned tomato sauce and a great ratio of ingredients, but the crust really left something to be desired.

Article Image
Homemade Pesto Gnocchi

The gnocchi was decent — the pasta was pan-fried to the perfect crispy exterior but had a nice chew, the basil pesto was flavourful, and the mozzarella added just enough creaminess to keep the dish interesting. But... it didn't excite me. I think it might be just a little too simple. I don't often toot my own horn when it comes to cooking, but I genuinely enjoyed the gnocchi dishes I made at home more than this. This is a good option for vegetarians, but I wouldn't order this again. I do have to mention, though: this dish's portion was particularly deceiving — it looks tiny in the bowl but the gnocchi is actually quite filling, especially when eaten alongside other dishes.

Article Image
Duck Confit Ravioli

The ravioli was beautiful. Each piece was stuffed to the brim with chunks of tender duck leg confit. They were pan-fried in brown butter and served in a duck bone broth, and then topped with pieces of perfectly crispy duck skin. Wish there was some more crispy sage, but overall, this dish was excellent with great flavours and textures and a decent portion size.

Article Image
Pistachio Tiramisu Millefoglie

For dessert, we decided on the pistachio tiramisu millefoglie. At $22, it's the most expensive dessert out of their three options, but it sounded the most interesting: pistachio, mascarpone, and coffee crema in between layers of baked pastry. Our server made sure we knew that it was not an actual tiramisu, but rather the cream layers use mascarpone and coffee like a tiramisu. I was really excited for this, but this was, by far, the biggest disappointment of our meal. Firstly, the presentation. It's cute, but dear god, the green colour is gaudy as fuck, as if it was getting ready for a St. Patrick's Day party. The pistachio flavour was incredibly artificial and it was strong — almost to the point where it didn't taste like pistachio anymore. The coffee crema and the baked pastry were great together and definitely saved the overall flavour, but this dessert was absolutely not worth $22. I hate to say it, but it's almost worse than supermarket quality.

That aside, our server was lovely and very nice, checked on us regularly to refill our waters and ask how the food was. The ambience is also beautiful — lots of natural lighting from the huge floor to ceiling windows, but there are still curtains that provide privacy in the direct dining area. The decor mixes classic banquet style seating but with art deco-style chairs, marble tables, and modern cubic light fixtures in a background of forest green with gold accents and stark white walls. The combination unexpectedly works to create a gorgeous, Instagram-worthy space.

Would I come back? Maybe one more time to see if the other options are worth it. You would think that with such a curated menu, they would excel in every single dish on it. But as it is, this place is way too overpriced for what you get.

Dining Out: Americano Pizza, Spaghetti Carbonara, and Zeppole from Scaddabush

on
Thursday, August 11, 2022
Amanda and I took Viv out for a belated birthday dinner at Scaddabush this evening. We decided to share an Americano pizza as a starter (it has Ezzo pepperoni which is very similar to the curved pepperoni you'd find on New York pizza; basically, it's fucking delicious); I ordered the Spaghetti Carbonara as my main (which was excellent — it comes with a runny egg which makes it even richer and creamier), and then we decided on the zeppole for dessert (which, according to Amanda, are not authentic at all, but they had a really nice soft, fluffy texture inside, a crisp exterior, and were surprisingly not too sweet). Basically, the food was delicious and totally satisfactory.

However, the service was fucking god awful

First, it took our server at least 10 minutes to come back to our table to take our orders. Second, our server knocked over the spoon of powdered parmesan all over Amanda's lap, didn't apologize, and just said, "Whoops, that happens all the time." (Which brings up two points: why the fuck are they putting powdered parmesan on spoons? And why are they continuing to put powdered parmesan on spoons when spilling it "happens all the time"?!) Third, our server asked if we wanted garlic bread with our pastas, so we agreed without knowing that it costs extra. This annoys the fuck out of me. A customer should not have to ask if anything costs extra, and definitely shouldn't have to fucking find out only when we get our bills. BE FUCKING TRANSPARENT, MOTHERFUCKERS. If we're willing to shell out $20 for pizza and $25 for pasta, you don't have to fucking scam us with fucking garlic bread. And considering the average price of their dishes, the garlic bread should be free, anyway. Even restaurants that are cheaper offer free bread baskets. If a burger joint can clearly list which toppings are free and which ones cost extra, your fucking chain restaurant can plainly list the cost of garlic bread.

Fourth, our server flat-out forgot about us as she didn't come back for at least another 20 minutes. We had to flag another server to ask for a water refill and yet another server for forks to eat our desserts. (HOW DO YOU SERVE FOOD AND FORGET TO GIVE UTENSILS?) When she finally came back to our table, she said, "Sorry, I was busy with other tables."

Well, at least she said sorry.

I won't be going back any time soon. Yes, Scaddabush improved the quality of their food, but I was so fucking displeased with the service tonight that I kinda just wanna boycott them. Which, come to think of it, might've been the reason I didn't go there for years, even before the pandemic... Anyway, conclusion: get takeout.

Puzza pizza from Scaddabush

Boss is definitely feeling guilty for stressing me out so much this week 'cause he bought me lunch again. Today's choice: the Puzza pizza from Scaddabush! Double-smoked bacon, Pecorino Alfredo sauce, mozzarella, gorgonzola, roasted mushrooms, mascarpone, and fresh parsley. This pizza was EXCELLENT. You know, I used to think Scaddabush was average at best, but I've actually been quite impressed with them over the past year. I don't know if it's because they really weren't that great before or if I just made the wrong menu choices. Either way, I need to milk the guilt as long as possible. I gotta eat through more cuisines...

Dining Out: Honey Garlic Pizza and Cheese Jjimdak with Black Sauce at Ssangkye Jjimdak

on
Sunday, July 3, 2022
My friend Iris suggested Korean food for dinner and as we were discussing different restaurants to go to, I suddenly remembered Ssangkye Jjimdak (a.k.a. the restaurant BTS visited when they were here in Toronto back in 2018, as documented in this episode of Run BTS! a few years ago), which is the only restaurant in the GTA that specializes in jjimdak. I hadn't been there in three years and Iris hadn't been there in even longer, so it was decided: we're having jjimdak for dinner.

In case you've never had jjimdak, it's Korean-style braised chicken. The variations at Ssangkye Jjimdak all include glass noodles, dumplings, cheese-stuffed tteokbokki, and regular tteokbokki. It's sweet, savoury, and freaking delicious. We decided on the cheese jjimdak with black sauce and, of course, the legendary honey garlic pizza to share. (Frankly, I'd come here equally for the braised chicken and the honey garlic pizza. Yes, it's that good. Thank you, BTS, to introducing me to this gem.) It's been three years, and I gotta say: Ssangkye Jjimdak still does some of the best Korean food in the GTA. I hadn't gone back sooner because of the pandemic but I have to visit again ASAP — the rosé jjimdak is calling my name.

To start, mozzarella caprese (mozzarella di bufala, cherry tomatoes, aged balsamic, basil), calamari fritti with lemon and garlic aioli, polpette (classic pork and veal meatballs, braised in a tomato sauce, fresh ricotta, basil), and a Diavola pizza (spicy soppressata, mushrooms, tomato sauce, basil). A special of the day, a gorgeous rack of lamb with roasted potatoes and rapini, to share. And finally, my chosen entree, the seafood linguine, filled with mussels, prawns, scallops, and calamari in a white wine sauce with crushed tomatoes.

Every single thing we ate tonight was spectacular, just beautiful flavour combinations and textures and consistencies in every dish. Hell, even the bread basket was good. The last time I came here was nine years ago and I gotta say, the restaurant has gone through drastic improvements in the quality of food, the menu curation, and the service, which was fantastic. I would go so far as to say it might be one of the best Italian restaurants in Markham right now.

My boss decided to treat us to our choice of lunch at work today, so all of us decided to get pizza from Nonna's Oven, which I have been wanting to try it for some time. Each of us picked a 14" traditional thin crust gourmet pizza — I chose the Firenze, which is a focaccia pizza topped with mozzarella, sliced potato, caramelized onions, goat cheese, whole black olives, oregano, olive oil, and rosemary. It was FANTASTIC. Great crust with a good amount of chew but perfectly crispy edges, fresh ingredients in generous portions, and an excellent topping to crust ratio. Plus I have enough left over for dinner, too, so I don't have to cook tonight! I will absolutely be coming back here for my next pizza craving.

Dining Out: Bona Pizze, Pappardelle alla Iosa, and Tiramisu at Terroni

on
Sunday, March 13, 2022
After leaving the BTS cup sleeve event this afternoon, Ying and I met up with my friend Austin for a late lunch at Terroni. I'd wanted to try Terroni for years but I don't find myself downtown often — and even when I do head down, it's usually for a BTS event and I just find a restaurant near the event cafe to eat at. But Austin and I texted each other last week and I told him I was going to be downtown today, so we agreed to meet for lunch because we hadn't seen each other in a few years and there was so much to catch up on. I asked him to pick the restaurant, so he chose Terroni because it's coincidentally one of his favourites. And the three of us proceeded to have one of the most leisurely, entertaining lunches I've had in a long, long time. Sharing stories, re-hashing old memories, and catching each other up on the last three years over delicious Italian food was a truly healing experience.

Ying and I shared the Bona Pizze (white pizza with mozzarella, mortadella, montasio stravecchio, pistachios, and honey), I had the Pappardelle alla Iosa (homemade spicy sausage, button and oyster mushrooms, peas, parmigiano, and extra-virgin olive oil), and the three of us split the tiramisu for dessert. There was not a bite of food I took during this lunch that I didn't absolutely love. I loved everything so much, in fact, that I think I will make Terroni my new go-to downtown restaurant. For 2.5 hours, we forgot about our woes, our stresses, and even the gloomy, bitter cold weather outside. So much so that we didn't even realize we were there for so long. (Seriously, when's the last time you had a lunch that was over two hours? Never? Yeah, same.) I just hope we get to do this again soon. I really missed that kid.

It has been a very, very long time since I went out for Italian food. I've been cooking so much of my own pasta that I hadn't really been craving it, but when Ying and her husband suggested going to Scaddabush for dinner, I couldn't resist. Maybe I could even get some inspo for cooking pasta at home.

Article Image
Diavolo Pizza

In lieu of an appetizer, we decided on the Diavolo pizza to share. It has one of the more unique combinations of toppings I've seen on a pizza menu: Nduja sausage, soppressata, tomato sauce, pecorino, caramelized onions, kalamata olives, honey, and chilies. It was actually really, really good; the sweetness of the honey and caramelized onions really compliments the saltiness of the sausage and soppressata, and there was a good amount of heat from the chilies. The crust was good, too, with some nice char on the bottom and a good inner chew. I would definitely order this one again.

Article Image
Roasted Mushroom & Truffle Gnocchi

For my main, I decided to get a pasta dish that I would never be able to make at home (at least with any success): the Roasted Mushroom & Truffle Gnocchi. First of all, it's gnocchi. I fucking love gnocchi. If there's gnocchi on the menu, I'm almost always gonna get it. But these particular gnocchi are pan-fried with roasted mushrooms in a brown butter Alfredo sauce with a drizzle of truffle oil, and IT IS TO DIE FOR. You know, I've been to Scaddabush a few times and I don't remember ever being really impressed with it, but this dish has changed my mind. Only question is, what the hell did I order before if there's gnocchi on the menu?

Article Image
Nutella Chocolate Cake

We were all pretty stuffed, but couldn't resist ordering a dessert to share. Neither her husband nor I had  any real preference, so Ying just chose the Nutella chocolate cake. However, the cake was... not impressive. Basic, very much like box cake. Something even I could bake, and probably to better results. Inside was quite dry, and the exterior was almost too hard. (Basically, it was over-baked.) Weirdly enough, there was almost no Nutella flavour. It was just chocolate. Even the sauce on the plate didn't taste like Nutella. Best part of the dessert was, frankly, the pistachio gelato on the side. Excellent, strong nutty flavour, very creamy, and very smooth. At the end of the day, though, the desserts here are just not worth the price. Come here for the pizza and the pasta, and then drive five minutes down the street to Demetres for dessert.
