Suchwita: Episode 27 — SUGA with Jang Yi-jeong (EL CAPITXN)

on
Monday, February 26, 2024

A real, raw, and honest conversation between two best friends. The perfect ending to this first season of Suchwita. Thank you, Min Yoongi, for giving us such an amazing platform to learn more about you and such a diverse spectrum of people. Suchwita has really been a highlight of my life for the past year. I truly, truly, truly hope for more seasons to come.

Suchwita: Episode 26 — SUGA with Lee Sung-kyung

on
Thursday, February 15, 2024

My Korean worlds are colliding (especially because I just re-watched Shooting Stars for the 3rd time.) This might be one of the most unexpected yet harmonious friendships I've ever seen. I WOULD KILL TO BE APART OF THIS GROUP.

Suchwita: Episode 25 — SUGA with Jung Yong-hwa

on
Monday, January 15, 2024

Yonghwa: "When I was living with the members, we'd talk about BTS, saying, "Hey, isn't there something different about them?" So I got curious since we were promoting at the same time. I got really curious about you guys. So i just went up to you and asked, 'What do you do on days off?' And you said, 'We write songs.'"
Yoongi: "'We work.'"
Yonghwa: "'We work.' Younger artists don't usually say that. Usually, it's something like, 'The agency doesn't give us days off…' or 'We can't go out to hang out.' 90% of answers are like that. But you guys… I just knew you'd make it big. So I figured I should get closer to you."

Yoongi: "Being hot can't last forever."
Yonghwa: "Right, right."
Yoongi: "And that's true. Because the career of a singer is shorter than you think. That's why when singers quit, they go into acting or do something else. I always think about it. BTS is so hot and doing great right now, but I know it won't last forever."
Yonghwa, seriously: "No! No! BTS forever! BTS FOREVER."

Outside of the Suchwita episodes with the other BTS members, I think this might be the funniest and most entertaining episode so far. I'm not that familiar with CNBLUE, but Jung Yonghwa is JOKES. (And also really, really good-looking.)

Suchwita: Episode 24 — SUGA with IU

on
Friday, December 29, 2023

"I think that if it weren't for the fans who watched over me and liked me, I would've quit a long time ago. But about two years ago, I started thinking I wanted to grow old with the fans I have. I might not get any new fans, I might not be as hot as I used to be, but I want to grow old with the people who were with me in my 20s."

This is why BTS is my forever artist. I found them when I was 30 and these are the people that I spent all of my 30s with, so it may sound silly, but I genuinely think this is why I love this decade so much more than my 20s. I totally understand IU's sentiment of wishing her 20s would be over soon. Your 20s are for growing up and your 30s are for finally feeling comfortable with who you've become. And on that note, I genuinely love Suga and IU's relationship. The ease, comfort, and banter between these two friends is an absolute pleasure to listen to. I sincerely hope they'll have more collaborations together in the future.

Suchwita: Episode 23 — SUGA with Kim Nam-gil

on
Monday, December 4, 2023

Okay, this might be a weird thing to say, but Kim Nam-gil seems like the type of boss who you'd strive to work for because of his hard work, ethics, and honesty, but then accidentally fall in love with because he's just such a genuinely good person who's simultaneously handsome and a little dorky. (Actually, now I can see why he and Jin are such good friends.)

Suchwita: Episode 22 — SUGA with Uhm Jung-hwa

on
Monday, November 20, 2023

"You only get to live once. I should be able to do what I want instead of cutting one thing out of my life to be included in something else. I decided to re-define what I do."

I see why Uhm Jung-hwa is considered to be one of the most influential people in the Korean entertainment industry. This woman has been in it for 30 years and continues to reinvent herself. She has an optimistic, humble attitude, and it makes her such a perfect role model for all the juniors in the industry. What an inspirational conversation.

Suchwita: Episode 21 — SUGA with Jungkook II

on
Saturday, November 4, 2023

Jungkook: "Without my aspirations to improve myself, I'm basically a dead man."
Yoongi: "Didn't you used to say that about passion?"
Jungkook: "... It's more or less the same thing..."

Yoongi: "Sometimes, when I hear you singing live, it's like you're on autotune. It just happened at some point."
Jungkook: "At some point? I think it was during 'Dynamite.'"
Yoongi: "Yes, that's it!"
Jungkook: "That was when I improved a lot."
Yoongi: "Yeah, like you broke through. That's what I thought."
Jungkook: "I'm making a new breakthrough again these days."
Yoongi: "Sure, you have to keep changing and try new genres."
Jungkook: "Right, right."
Yoongi: "We're not artists that do just one genre. When we can do various genres."
Jungkook: "I really like being able to do that."
Yoongi: "It's our weapon, our strongest weapon."

Jungkook: "I keep thinking about how fun it'll be when we're back together again and perform."
Yoongi: "When we do, we'll devour the whole world."

Jungkook: "I think this period in my life is the golden time for me."
Yoongi: "Nah, you'll have more times that are golden."
Jungkook: "I'm just saying, 'Seven' did so well so I don't want to miss out on this golden period in my life. That's what I wanted to capture in my album."
Yoongi: "In my opinion, two or three more times like this will come."
Jungkook: "I have to work for that. I have to work harder for that to happen."
Yoongi: "Also, as soon as I saw that album cover, I thought, 'He's a true pop star!'
Jungkook: "Yes!"
Yoongi: "We finally have an Asian pop star!"

Okay, I've been listening to GOLDEN on repeat since it was released yesterday and it's absolutely true what Yoongi said — the ability to do different genres really is BTS' strongest weapon. All 11 tracks on GOLDEN are totally different genres and Jungkook uses a huge range of vocal styles on each one — and he always sounds flawless. Jungkook's vocal ability has always astounded me; he never sounds out of place or awkward on any track he's ever been on, and he is absolutely BTS' main vocalist for a reason. As I predicted, "Standing Next to You," "Yes or No," "Hate You," and "Shot Glass of Tears" are the standouts for me, but there's not a single skippable song on this album — which is actually rare for me on a full album. At this point, it would surprise me if Jungkook didn't get at least one Album of the Year award.

Suchwita: Episode 20 — SUGA with Taemin

on
Monday, October 30, 2023

Yoongi: "What lesson are you receiving?"
Jimin: "English lessons."
Yoongi: "You'll speak better English after a drink."
Jimin: "Yeah, when I'm a bit sleepy, I speak better English."
Yoongi: "Yeah, if I drink, I become as good as Kim Namjoon."

Taemin: "But Jimin's balance is amazing. It's so good for dancing. The way Jimin uses his body, if others start their dance here, it's like Jimin starts from here. And his centre of gravity isn't on the top of his body but more below so his dance lines are really pretty but his masculine vibes are at the core."

Yoongi: "How did you make the solo artist Taemin and what work did you put in?"
Taemin: "Do I construct my own identity or do I follow popular appeal? When I had to make a decision between the two, I chose my own identity. 'I don't know about popular appeal,' 'I don't know what people like.' I'm just gonna do what I'm good at. If you don't like it, fine. And if you like it, great. That was my mindset and I'm still like that. But thankfully, people resonated with my music and there were fanatics of my music. But even now, I don't think I will care that much and continue to pursue my own colours."

I can really see why Taemin has become so many idols' role model, but I especially see his influence in Jimin. Not just in dance (there is a lot of debate over "best" dancer in K-pop, but Taemin and Jimin are always on those lists — and have you ever heard someone describe Jimin's dancing as accurately as Taemin?), but in the way he carries himself, the way he speaks, the choices he makes, and the way he's popularized gender-fluidity in the K-pop scene. A pioneer, indeed.

Suchwita: Episode 19 — SUGA with Kim Jong-wan

on
Tuesday, October 17, 2023

"If you follow [an artist's] path and their work, you can tell if they truly love music."
This was an amazing, insightful conversation between two incredibly talented, passionate musicians. Both "Everythingoes" and "Dear My Friend" are my favourite tracks from Mono and D-2, respectively, and are actually what introduced me to Nell. Indeed, Yoongi really is the most successful fanboy, ever.

Suchwita: Episode 18 — SUGA with V

on
Monday, September 11, 2023

"One thing I can confidently say is that BTS worked harder than anyone for the past 10 years."

I've watched so many musicians of so many different genres in the last decade, and I genuinely think this statement is true. There is a reason why BTS has broken so many records, gained so much popularity, and became a global phenomenon. They are genuinely the hardest working people I've ever followed, but more than that, they genuinely love and care for each other and prioritize the group over the individual — even as they're working on solo projects — and this is what sets them apart from anyone else in this industry. As they mentioned, they all have such distinct colours and are immensely successful individually, but they all agree — and they are — at their best when they're together as a group.

Suchwita: Episode 17 — SUGA with Lee Kang-in

on
Friday, August 25, 2023

I've never really considered how similar athletes and artists really are, but in almost every way, they are two sides of the same coin. They're from completely different fields, and yet both Suga and Lee Kang-in could be considered Korea's pride. I'm not into sports so I don't know much about any particular athlete, but this was a thoroughly interesting conversation.

Suchwita: Episode 16 — SUGA with Hwang Min-hyun

on
Monday, August 7, 2023

Throughout this entire episode, I kept thinking, "Man, this guy looks like equal parts Park Seojoon and Kim Youngdae." (Which is to say, he is one handsome motherfucker.) But then I kept wondering, "Why does this guy look so familiar?" and finally realized he played the cute guy in Live On. And what do you know, his latest drama, My Lovely Liar, popped up in my recommends on Viki just today. So I guess this is the world telling me that I am meant to get to know Hwang Minhyun better.

(On that note, I hope they filmed more episodes of Suchwita in advance because I don't know how I will get through the Yoongi withdrawals...)

Suchwita: Episode 15 — SUGA with Jungkook (+ Bonus Noraebang Clip)

on
Saturday, July 29, 2023

[Listening to "Seven"]
Yoongi: "Ah, okay, okay, okay. I'm getting a feeling already."
Jungkook: "It's awesome, right?"
Yoongi: "Let's go, No. 1 on the Hot 100! Jungkook, let's go! Get a move on! I can just tell from the first verse that it'll be No. 1 on the Hot 100! LET'S GO!"

Yoongi: "People need to know this. Before he joined the agency, he had never sung in his life."
Jungkook: "Right."
Yoongi: "And I've seen everything you've gone through."
Jungkook: "Honestly, in the past, hearing that was a lot of pressure so I didn't like hearing it. But I had to work even harder because people were saying that."
Yoongi: "Of course. You just have to keep going. You were born with the talent. You're good at singing high notes, too."
Jungkook: "I couldn't before."
Yoongi: "What was hard for me when you practiced was that you'd be singing every moment your eyes were open. I'd be like, 'Can you not sing in the car?', 'Can you not sing in the green room?'"
Jungkook, proudly: "I got told off a lot."
Yoongi: "But that's how hard you worked. Everyone on our team is a super hard worker."
Jungkook: "We had to be."
Yoongi: "And it's been ten years now! Ten years! What's so interesting about our team is that we each have a clear role, which is great. Roles that no one else can do. I think that really helps us complement each other. I love that about us."

Yoongi: "Oh, we have to talk about that. I wondered how you did it."
Jungkook: "Did what?"
Yoongi: "The Qatar World Cup."
Jungkook: "Ahh, Qatar."
Yoongi: "I was watching it live. Don't you think the entire country was watching it?"
Jungkook, shyly: "Prob…ably?"
Yoongi: "While I was watching, I said out loud as I was watching it alone at home, 'He's so cool.' For real, for real. I was like, 'Whoa!' We're on the same team and we perform together, but as an ordinary citizen, I felt so proud, my shoulders went like this." *shrugs shoulders up to ears* "'That's our team's youngest!' Everyone was talking about you. Tell me about how you prepared for it."
Jungkook: "Preparing for it wasn't easy. You know how it is. You notice the parts that need work. There were a lot of parts that needed more work. It was just different. So, I went five or six days before the show in Qatar, and I was really glad I got there early."
Yoongi: "Why?"
Jungkook: "I thought I would only have to do a rehearsal once I got there, but I realized we had to improve some parts. And I didn't get any choreo, either!"
Yoongi: "Oh, really?"
Jungkook: "I didn't get anything! There were dancers but I didn't have any choreo. I thought it would be so weird if I didn't dance while everyone else was, so I just asked for the choreo video and said I'd just copy it."
Yoongi: "So you did?"
Jungkook: "Yeah, and during the last chorus, the choreo changes and becomes intense. I asked them to change that part, so they did and I re-did the formations. That's how it went. Originally, there was nothing."
Yoongi, proudly: "But it was so… While I was watching, I thought you just looked like a total superstar. I was talking with the members, and we were like, 'He was to be a singer until the day he dies.'"

Jungkook: "One of the things that I feel really lucky about… Not one of the many things, I mean the one thing I feel most lucky about is that I met you guys."
Yoongi: "Since you're the youngest, the six of us really cared about you a lot."
Jungkook: "Thank you."
Yoongi: "We really looked out for you."
Jungkook: "I grew up so well because of you guys."
Yoongi: "When do you think you grew up well?"
Jungkook: "When I think about how I'm not mean?"
Yoongi: "None of us have any malice."
Jungkook: "Yeah."
Yoongi, sighing: "You're an adult now. You're all grown up."
Jungkook, laughing: "He says that every time he sees me."
Yoongi: "I can't help it when I see you. You still have the exact same face from middle school. Your face looks exactly the same as when you were in middle school."

Yoongi: "As the person Jeon Jungkook, not BTS Jeon Jungkook, do you have a dream?"
Jungkook: "That premise is wrong."
Yoongi: "Yeah, you can't really separate the two."
Jungkook: "I can't be separated like that. Then the dream of Jeon Jungkook as a person and a BTS member… I'm hoping a day will come when I'm able to think that I'm pretty good, that I'm really, really cool, myself."
Yoongi: "So you want to be a narcissist?"
Jungkook: "Yeah. Even now, I think I'm lacking in many ways. But if I work really hard at it and reach the level where I'm satisfied with myself… It would just be great if a moment like that came."
Yoongi: "You're the only one who doesn't know. Everyone else thinks that way about you. Even I think that way."

[Finishes singing "That, That"]
Yoongi: "Let's go." *walks off set*
Jungkook: *clapping* "Great job, everyone!" *starts eating again* "Well done!"
Yoongi: *walks back onto set* "Aren't you going home?"
Jungkook: "I will, I will, I will."
Yoongi: "If you're gonna drink, go home and drink!"
Jungkook: *pours himself a drink*
Yoongi: "You're having more?"
Jungkook: "I don't want to waste it."
Yoongi: "Just leave it here! Why are you drinking here?!"
Jungkook, totally ignoring Yoongi: *looks up at alcohol display*
Yoongi: "Anyway! This was so fun."
Jungkook: "This was fun, it was great."
Yoongi: "I'm leaving."
Jungkook: "See you! Bye!" *continues pouring himself a drink* "I'm having a lot of fun. Should I sing another song before I go?"

Aaaand, this is why Jungkook's livestreams are always over 3 hours...

God, I love this kid so much.

Suchwita: Episode 14 — SUGA with J-Hope

on
Wednesday, July 19, 2023

Hobi: "Remember that day we had wine at your place?"
Yoongi: "Oh, yeah. We had wine and you threw up."
Hobi, laughing: "It was a mess! It was purple everywhere!"

Hobi: "To celebrate the first anniversary of Jack in the Box, [a physical album] is in the works."
Yoongi: "I told you the last time you were here, you have to release a physical album."
Hobi: "Right, you said that."
Yoongi: "I said that the fans would love it."
Hobi: "In the beginning, I started out with a mixtape concept, so I worked on that in January. And since the idea was to do a mixtape, I thought I'd release a Weverse album or an LP just to commemorate the occasion. But like you said, there was a bigger need for a physical album, a full album, than I expected."
Yoongi: "Right, and it's your first album. These days, the concept of albums... people don't buy CDs to play them. It's a type of merchandise."
Hobi: "Yeah, I think so, too."
Yoongi: "And fans want that. It's the same with LPs. How often do you think I listen to LPs? But I want them in my collection and that's why I told you to release one."
Hobi: "Yes, the fans wanted it so much, and you and Jimin would also be releasing solo albums, so the fact that I didn't have a physical album did bother me a little. And I also felt really sorry about that to the fans, so I thought I should make one. I took new photos for it and renewed everything."
Yoongi: "Ah, new photos?"
Hobi: "Yes. It's going to be a proper album. The kind that the fans wanted. That's going to be released for the first anniversary."

[Talking about the OST for J-Hope's upcoming dance documentary]
Yoongi: "Why is everyone working so hard?!"
Hobi: "It's just really light music this time, songs you can dance to."
Yoongi: "God, these guys are crazy about music. You guys are insane."
Hobi: "It's fun. For me, music is the most fun. What's so awesome about our members is that their passion is the best."
Yoongi: "Yeah, of course. We're dead without passion."
Hobi: "You have a lot of passion, and Jimin is practicing singing live six hours a day... The passion our members have is just amazing. I think that's why we all get along and came this far."

[Talking about J-Hope being the dance leader in BTS]
Hobi: "I think I totally understood them, though. They were guys who had never danced before. What else could they do? It makes no sense, honestly. So I was just grateful that everyone made the effort."
Yoongi: "We always felt bad about not being good dancers. So, we worked even harder without anyone knowing. During our Busan concert, Seokjin said he'd start practice a few days earlier. Namjoon, too. Seeing that made me feel thankful. A team can't be good just by one person being good on their own. You have to be in tune with each other. And for the past ten years, there were ups and downs, but I think we worked pretty well together. I think that was BTS' biggest motivation."

Yoongi: "I've released solo albums and did solo concerts, too, but I think we're the most awesome when we're all together."
Hobi: "Yeah, we can't beat that."
Yoongi: "I think we'll be together for a long, long time. I think our team will last a long time. And I think in 2025, we'll be able to go on tour as a whole group. I think we'll be able to feel [those emotions] again when that time comes. I hope that the team that we've dedicated ourselves to will come back together as soon as possible so that we can show everyone what we can do. I don't think that feeling will change."

[Talking about their first dorm pre-debut]
Yoongi: "The team wasn't disbanded, but remember when we were all told to go home? Because the company ran out of money?"
Hobi, nodding: "Yeah. We didn't know what to do."
Yoongi: "We were told to find our own places."
Hobi: "Yeah, we had to move out."
Yoongi: "But we didn't have any money, either."
Hobi: "Didn't we refuse to move out in the end?"
Yoongi: "Yeah, we stayed. Me, you, and Kim Namjoon. We said, 'We can't move out!'"
Hobi, laughing: "How did we...?"
Yoongi: "'We can't move out!' We said we didn't have any money to move out. So we stuck it out, and for the last time, they got an investment and we were able to debut with that."
Hobi, nodding: "Yeah."
Yoongi: "Sometimes I wonder what kind of vision the seven of us had to stick it out for that long."
Hobi: "You have to give it to PD Bang Si-hyuk. It's amazing how he got us together."
Yoongi: "No one knew this would happen."
Hobi: "Oh, no one knew."
Yoongi, with a disbelieving look: "HYBE?"
Hobi: "You don't have to say another word. Your face says it all. But yeah, no one expected it."
Yoongi: "But now that I think about it, after coming this far, it's like, 'Wow, we managed to hang in there and get through it all.'"
Hobi: "Yeah, we stuck it out. And that's why we're here."

THIS. This is why I'm ARMY and why I'll support them for as long as they want our support. I truly believe there is no one harder working than this team and that they deserve all the success they've gotten and will continue to get.

On another note, and I mentioned this before, but I'm so glad Hobi's finally getting a physical album. I did think it was strange and a huge disappointment that we didn't get one when Jack in the Box originally came out, and even weirder when Jin, RM, Jimin, and Suga all ended up releasing physical records. I'm so happy that Hobi got the opportunity to present another facet of himself for the physical version of Jack in the Box. I'm also really excited for Hobi's upcoming dance documentary, which he had hinted at in his Hope in the Box documentary. Truly, I've never seen this kind of impeccable project planning.

Honestly, the best episodes of Suchwita are the ones with the BTS members. Can't wait for Jungkook's episode next week!

Suchwita: Episode 13 — SUGA with Cho Se-ho

on
Monday, July 3, 2023

This was an incredible interview. I never thought I would literally laugh out loud and literally tear up so many times within a 36-minute time frame. I don't know if it's because they're friends and there's already a genuine camaraderie and comfort level between them, but there was no awkwardness or shyness or forced answers. The flow of the interview was great, the conversation was natural, and they covered a ton of topics that Yoongi didn't even need to prompt. Like many ARMY, I didn't love Cho Seho after his interactions with Jungkook on Flower Crew back in 2016 — even though, realistically, everything that was said was for entertainment — until they appeared together again (with BTS) on You Quiz on the Block a couple years ago. So now I gotta say: Cho Seho, you're not too bad.

Suchwita: Episode 12 — SUGA with Jin

on
Sunday, June 11, 2023

[Discussing making whiskey]
Jin: "You've been studying, huh?"
Yoongi, shyly: "Did some on whiskey, yes."
Jin: "BTS' useless encyclopedia!"
Yoongi: "I'm always looking things up on Namuwiki."
Jin: "You know all sorts of weird stuff. You've still got it!"

[Talking about the homemade alcohol Jin brought]
Yoongi: "What does [the name Sahaehyeongje] mean? Does it mean you become brothers if you drink it?"
Jin: "Something like that. If you drink it, you become brothers with your friends."
Yoongi: "We're already brothers and family."
Jin: "I didn't come up with the name."

Jin: "You might not know this, but when I sing 'The Astronaut' at a karaoke, I have to look at the lyrics."
[An energetic cameraman suddenly appears in frame]
Yoongi: "It's like a prompter. It gives you a sense of security."
Jin: "Well- "
[Yoongi whips his head around towards this random cameraman]
Jin, noticing a commotion: "What is this thing?"
[Hobi giggling in the background]
Yoongi: "I saw him from the corner of my eye and someone was being freaking annoying."
[Hobi laughs even louder in the background]
Yoongi: "So I was positive it was one of our members."
Jin: "I was wondering what was up with the staff!"
Yoongi: "I was like, 'Why is he taking pictures like that?' I knew it had to be Jeon Jungkook or J-Hope."

[Hobi looks for water after sipping alcohol]
Hobi, looking around: "I noticed on Episode 1 that you have a fridge."
Yoongi, getting up: "It's over here. This is my place. Over here. I have sugar, too." [kicks bags of sugar] "Sugar, sugar."
Jin: "Why do you have sugar?" [moment of realization] "SUGA!"

[Discussing the aftermath of Jin's speech about disbandment during 2018 MAMA]
Hobi: "Even until 2018, I still don't know, but I thought we were just underdogs."
Yoongi: "I think we need something like that, though."
Hobi: "Yeah, totally."
Yoongi: "Without it, there's no driving force. Of course, it was very tough at the time, but because we got through that, in 2019 and 2020, we were able to achieve what we did. What I love about our members is that when we're given good content or something that's good, we all voluntarily do it. I realized that during "Run BTS." We all came out to practice voluntarily. Even if someone had something on their schedule, they'd come out an hour early to practice."
Jin: "Isn't that a given?"
Yoongi: "It is for us. But the fact that everyone does that without any hesitation and still enjoys it... It's just so amazing. Although we're on the same team, I just feel really lucky to have met you all."
Hobi: "I always feel the same way, too. To be frank, we're not a team that made it just because one person did really well. We're here because we all worked really hard."
Yoongi: "And we believe in each other. We don't think that one of us won't do well."
Jin: "We don't think that at all."
Yoongi: "We never even had that thought. When I ask a member to feature on a song or do something, that thought never crosses my mind."
Hobi: "And about that, everyone has- "
Yoongi: "A sense of pride."

Yoongi: "Theres something I'm curious about, though. Lately, I've been thinking sometimes, 'What if I hadn't been in BTS?' What would 30-year-old Min Yoongi be doing? I try to imagine that."
Jin, pondering: "I think... "
Yoongi: "What do you think you'd be doing?"
Jin: "I would've failed miserably, to be honest."
[Yoongi and Hobi laughing]
Jin: "Because I'm not very good at doing things voluntarily. I work really hard on the things I'm told to do. I do my best to do my part, but- "
Yoongi: "What are you talking about? You're good at doing things voluntarily!"
Hobi: "You went to Argentina [to perform with Coldplay] voluntarily!"
Yoongi: "And you made Sahaehyeongje voluntarily!"
Jin: "I like to stay at home, and I don't meet a lot of people. I'm what you call an 'outsider.' So I probably would be playing games at home and getting my back slapped by my parents."
Hobi: "You'd have heard things like, 'Why is a good-looking guy like you living this way?'"
Jin: "I hear that even now."

This episode is the only one that has quite literally made my cry one minute and laugh out loud the next. God, I miss this family so much. 2025 can't come fast enough.

Suchwita: Episode 11 — SUGA with Lee Na-young

on
Monday, May 22, 2023

"So at some point, I just want to be a kind of person without the need for an adjective."

I don't know much about Lee Nayoung or her work; I've only seen her in Romance is a Bonus Book, and did think her acting was great despite not loving the drama itself. I'm not sure what I was expecting from this conversation — and it was almost uncomfortably awkward at the beginning — but as they kept talking, they became more vulnerable and honest with each other and it was very interesting to see this dynamic and how these two very different people in very different stages of life have so much in common.

Suchwita: Episode 10 — SUGA with Woozi of Seventeen

on
Monday, May 1, 2023

Yoongi, casually: "Are you having a fansign event?"
Woozi: "Probably?"
Yoongi: "And a video call fansign event?
Woozi: "Yes, we are."
Yoongi: "Do you know how to do the 'Sorry for being cute' challenge?"
Woozi, putting his hands together: "'Gomen…' You mean this?"
Yoongi, outraged: "Everyone knows how to do this! Only BTS didn't know! That was the first time I ever heard of it! People go like this —" [puts hands together, waving them back and forth] "— and they look so professional!"
Woozi, laughing: "I'm not good at it, either."
Yoongi: "I've never done a video call fansign event before. The last fansign event I did was about four years ago. I've never done this before, but I'll be doing promotions by the time this airs. And I'll have to do this, too!" [puts hands together, waving them back and forth]
Woozi, nodding: "You probably will."
Yoongi: "About ten things… I'll prepare at least ten things… I should get some practice. I've reached my 30s now and my idol power is diminishing… I can't be outdone by idols who are in their teens and 20s!"
Woozi, laughing: "You're definitely a pro!"
Yoongi: "I have to do it if I don't want to be outdone!"

Yoongi: "When you first joined the agency, you didn't dance."
Woozi: "Yeah, I didn't join as a dancer."
Yoongi: "I didn't know anything about dancing, either."
Woozi, laughing: "You're famous for that. I saw the meme a long time ago."
Yoongi: "I was scammed! It was an employment scam!"

Yoongi: "When I first debuted, I heard from other artists that idols last seven years, because the contract is for seven years. After that, you end up doing individual things, because some want to go solo and some want to act. But that's only possible because of the team. The team can never break up. And no individual is better than the team. That's what I think. and we always talk about it, too. Of course, there will come a time when you have to be physically apart from your fans, but I believe that during that time, during those two years when we can't all be together, they will still be there, waiting. In other words, that also means that the artist must still be there, too. We all have to be there."

What a great episode. I don't know anything about Woozi or Seventeen, but this conversation was really interesting from the perspective of two main producers. (And two people who joined their bands through an employment scam. 😂)

Suchwita: Episode 9 — RM with Agust D

I was wondering how Agust D would be able to appear on Suchwita as the guest. (I thought it was going to be like this interview. 😂) Honestly, I  don't think there's anyone better than RM to take Yoongi's place here. The ease and comfort between the two is the perfect way to get the most honest, free-flowing, and hilarious interview.

Suchwita: Episode 8 — SUGA with Yeonjun and Taehyun of TXT

THIS WAS SO WHOLESOME. (Even the way Yeonjun gets trashed is adorable.)

I'm not a huge TXT fan, but I've always respected them for their position as BTS' dongsaeng group within BigHit. The pressure on them to succeed must've been — and still is — tremendous. I like that they acknowledge that, but also the fact that BTS paved the way for them (and for K-pop in general), which is both admirable and burdensome.
