Shawn, Vito, and I went for dinner at Pho On 7, since we always go to Pho 88 and wanted to try something new. The spring rolls were pretty standard, not really better or worse than other pho restaurants, but the pho was definitely tasty (we each got their special, which includes beef slices, tripe, beef balls, and beef tendon). Their broth is less salty and they use less MSG than most pho places, and they give you a really good amount of noodles and meat (so much so, I couldn't even finish my bowl). For the price of $7.99 a bowl (large), it's $1 more than the special at Pho 88, but I thought it was pretty worth it.
The only qualm I have about the place is our hostess/waitress. Maybe she doesn't speak English, but first she didn't understand what "a can of Coke" was, then she forgot our glasses of water even though we asked twice, and even though we wrote down on our order sheet that we wanted three bowls of the pho special and one order of spring rolls (we double-checked), we were somehow given three orders of spring rolls and one bowl of pho (you can't even blame that on not understanding English; our order numbers were written clearly on the sheet!). And she was so slow and inefficient, even though she was only waiting on three tables. When we go to Pho 88, we sit, order, eat, and pay within 20 minutes. But we were at Pho On 7 for about an hour. Ridiculous, since people go to pho 'cause it's quick. Unless it's Friday or Saturday after 2:00am (Pho On 7 closes at 5:00am on weekends), I think I'll stick to Pho 88.
Pho is one of those things that have to come super quick and super hot. Waiting an hour just kills it!

LOL, no, no, we didn't wait an hour for the food -- we were at the restaurant for an hour. It's just unheard of at Pho 88. And yeah, the lady at Pho 88 remembers us, too (she's like, BFFs with Edward), so she always gives us dibs on seating. :)

ReplyDeleteDamn, I'm craving Pho now. Beef tendon is so heavenly. So is tripe. Some of my co-workers totally think I'm gross for eating tripe, but they're seriously missing out.

ReplyDeleteI've become lazy and either go to the overpriced place near my house or the one with crap service on Bloor St/Bedford near UofT. My fave part of the pho experience is actually the broth. :)

Liz, you mean Pho Hung beside McDonald's, right? I went to that school for 5 years and never once stepped foot in Pho Hung. My bf warned me to stay away.. lol. There's really no good pho place near UofT unless you go down Spadina.
