Shawn and I went for dinner at Pixel 8, where I ordered from their "Ramen Lovers" menu:

Guys, meet my new favourite noodle soup: Ramen in a lobster broth base. I have wanted to try it since last summer, and I just don't know why it's taken me this long to have it. Now, it has to be said, the lobster taste isn't exactly strong, but there's something about this broth that is ridiculously addictive. It's rich but not thick, and flavourful but not too salty. I'm not sure how else to describe it, but this is that kind of broth that you want to drink every last drop. The ramen noodles — which I've decided is one of my favourites because it's not too thin or thick, with the perfect springy texture — definitely brings this dish up from good to stupendously awesome. Some people find the ramen there to be mediocre, but I totally love it. Moreover, I find that Pixel 8 gives a very healthy portion of noodles, more so than other ramen places I've been to. I got mine with deep fried oysters, which are gigantic and have the same batter as their tonkatsu. They were delicious, to say the least, but perhaps a little too filling. I was seriously waddling out of there. Either way, for $7.99, you just can't go wrong.

  1. I haven't had carbs for 2 months now and this ramen post is absolutely killing me. :(

  2. Can you believe it's impossible to get a bowl of ramen noodles here? The closest is Udon noodles but only two restaurants serve it. I need to move to a more food-friendly country, stat! :)

  3. Nooooo. Why did you have to post about Pixel 8? I haven't been there in a couple months and you've just given me a serious craving at 10AM in the morning. Lol.

  4. @Irene -- Lol, I'm so, so sorry. Why are you not eating carbs?

@Fieran -- There's always a time and place for udon noodles... But nothing really compares to ramen noodles when you're craving it! I wonder why you can get one but not the other; I don't think -- ingredient-wise -- they're very different. Or even restaurants that buy the noodles wholesale or whatever -- how hard is it to order the ramen WITH the udon? Perhaps there isn't a market for ramen noodles in Norway...?

@Lindsay -- LOL, I'll go to Pixel 8 like, once every few months, and every time I go there, I find a new gem that has me craving for the next couple months. You should totally get a bowl of ramen for breakfast -- it's the Asian way! ;)

  5. I even love the regular MSG-filled instant ramen. I'd eat like three bowls of this if I could! I should start a list of all the great food places you've been reviewing. Why are all the good stuff up north now?

  6. It doesn't make sense to me either. On the upside, it has made me appreciate food more and more. I tried to re-create the Momofuku pork buns and it was easier than I thought it would be. Will blog about it soon :)

  7. @Liz -- LOL, I'd say that all the good ASIAN restaurants are up north now. And that's because everyone's migrating up here, 'cause the houses are much bigger and significantly less expensive (at least, per square foot -- or so my mom says). All the Asians and browns are basically in Markham. :P And, so, they bring with them THE MOST DELICIOUS FOOD, EVER. But, I totally agree, I love the regular instant noodles, too. It's like, 500 calories per package... and I totally eat two at a time. :P

@Fieran -- I have never had the Momofuku pork buns, and I am constantly jealous of those who have. They are on the top of my To-Eat list for NYC, lol. So, yes, please, post about pork buns soon! :D
