Friday Five: Dreaming

This week's Friday Five:
  1. If you suddenly received a ton of money and could open up some kind of store or service just for the pleasure of having it, what would it be? I would love to open up a cosmetics store that carries more hard-to-find niche brands.
  2. What service or store that no longer exists do you miss most? There were a lot more of these retro-style, independently-owned shops down on Queen Street West that I loved exploring when I was younger. I don't remember what some of them were called now, but they would sell the most random, kitschy things, from candy to tutus to Hello Kitty toasters. I think most of them are closed now, having been bought out by larger corporations.
  3. What local business do you think you could make better if you were to take it over? And if you don't mind sharing, what changes would you make? There is a little indoor food court that is right across the street from a local high school that is seriously ghetto. I don't know who owns the plaza, but I feel grimy just walking by there (I don't do this often since I mostly drive, but there used to be a convenience store in that plaza where I would buy my cigarettes occasionally). I would spruce up the area, make it a little modern and add some better lighting, make it more open concept and add a nice seating area.
  4. What spot nearby seems to be impossible for businesses to survive in? I live in a relatively newly developed area where there are new stores, restaurants, supermarkets, whatever opening all the time. Seriously, the traffic is starting to get ridiculous. There is, however, a little plaza right by my neighbourhood that was finished construction some time last year, but no one seems to have leased any of the units yet. So it's just an empty shell of a building right now.
  5. We've all seen stores that combined books and records, beer and laundry, or coffee and whatever. What would be a cool hybrid of two disparate ideas for somewhere you’d like to hang out? Obviously, a make-up store and a café in one. I could load up on caffeine and do some hardcore cosmetics shopping. I would never leave!

  1. Okay, I just wanted to let you know that if you ever did decide to open a cosmetics store with a cafe in it? I WOULD BE THERE ALL THE TIME. :D

    3. Better business plan: Cosmetics store, record store, book store, and cafe ALL IN ONE.

      Basically, Indigo with make-up.

    5. RIGHT??? We need something extra so people will prefer shopping in our stores instead of shopping online...
