MAC Moody Blooms: Eyeshadows

Last Thursday, MAC released a new collection called Moody Blooms. This collection is inspired by "exotic flora exuding a hint of danger... a sensual hothouse of night-blooming flowers [that] sets the scene for seduction. In this garden of the night, moody blooms become the ultimate obsession... venomous violets, intoxicating ivy and poisonous nightshade glow with a phosphorescent gleam. As the blossoming buds unfurl into the darkness, electric colours emerge..." The entire collection features a total of 25 products — 12 of which are new and limited edition (of which one is an online exclusive), eight of which are re-promotes, and five of which are permanent. Moody Blooms will see the release of six new eyeshadows; two are new and limited edition, three are re-promotes, and one is permanent. Each Eyeshadow comes in regular black packaging, contains 1.5 grams of product, and retails for $18.

Green Room is a medium-dark brightened teal in a Satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. There is nothing similar to this in MAC's permanent eyeshadow range; it is lighter, brighter, and more green than Plumage, and brighter and more blue than Bottle Green.

Lucky Green is a light-medium vibrant lime green with yellow undertones and a golden sheen in a Veluxe Pearl finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a soft, almost buttery texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is brighter and more yellow than Swimming, more green and more frosted than Bitter, and lighter and more yellow than Lime.

Deep Fixation is a medium-dark red-toned copper brown in a Veluxe Pearl finish. This is a re-promoted shade from last year's PRO-only Nudes & Metallics collection, and is limited edition. It has a soft, almost buttery texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more red-toned than Antiqued, more copper than Twinks, and darker than Copper Pigment (PRO).

Artistic License is a light-medium peachy-pink with a golden sheen in a Veluxe Pearl finish. It is a re-promoted shade from last year's Antonio Lopez collection, and is limited edition. It has a soft, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is lighter and more peach than Expensive Pink, darker and more pink than Naked Lunch, and more pink than Melon Pigment.

Blooming Mad is a light-medium cool-toned lavender-fuchsia duochrome in a Frost finish. It is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is similar though perhaps slightly lighter than Stars 'n' Rockets, similar though slightly more muted than Pink Pearl Pigment (PRO), and lighter and more pink than Creme de Violet. 

Hidden Motive is a medium-dark red-toned aubergine-plum in a Veluxe Pearl finish. It is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, almost buttery texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more reddened than Nocturnelle, darker than Plum Dressing, and lighter and more metallic than Fig. 1.

For whatever reason, Moody Blooms didn't receive a lot of fanfare, perhaps due to the timing of its release after such big, hyped-up collections like Alluring Aquatics and Kelly & Sharon Osbourne, or perhaps because it doesn't come with special edition packaging... and it's a damn shame, because these are gorgeous. MAC has been hitting it out of the park with their eyeshadow textures lately, and these are no exception. All six shades are smooth and silky, executing evenly with full colour pay-off, on top of being easy to blend out and layer on. I also love the colour story with this collection; deeper, jewel-tone shades with pops of vibrant colour that's a somewhat unexpected combination for summer, but still keeps in line with this season's make-up trends. After this past Spring's A Fantasy of Flowers collection, it's nice to see the darker, sexier side of floral shades.
