Meet the newest member of my family:
My brother offered to buy me a camera as a (really) belated birthday and Christmas present, so when I really thought about it, I decided I wanted a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera instead of a DSLR, which would be really cumbersome to carry around (and, let's be honest, I would never make use of all the functions of a DSLR — I'm just way too lazy to read the entire manual). I think a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera is a really good option for those of us who want the portability and ease of a point-and-shoot with the interchangeable lens capabilities of a DSLR. After much debate (and asking about ten people for their opinion), I ended up picking the Nikon 1 J1 with a 1 NIKKOR 10-30mm f/3.5 – 5.6 VR lens. In the end, it was like picking PC or Apple — for me, given the choice, it's always Apple. Form meets function, you know? So that's how I thought of the Nikon 1 J1. Are there better cameras on the market for the same price? Oh, absolutely. Will I love it as much as the Nikon? Mmm, probably not. It was love at first sight.
O-M-G!!!! How is it?!?
ReplyDeleteI'm still getting used to using an interchangeable lens after using point-and-shoots for so long, but OH GOD I LOVE. And, let's be honest, I just like looking at it. :P
DeleteI still need to name it! Suggestions? ;)
Hmmmmm......
DeleteCharlie?! LOL
Ooooh! I'm such a photo n00b. DSLR looks so intimidating to me, so I'll consider this when I upgrade from my basic point and shoot. How nice of your brother!
ReplyDeleteHaha, totally! I was originally interested in a DSLR, 'cause I had a 35mm film SLR about 10 years ago (I did photography in high school for 2 years)... but then I realized, I'm not going to sit around and memorize all the details and functions of a DSLR. A lot of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras are the same price as some of the DSLRs, but they are so much smaller and more portable -- that's pretty much what sold it for me. :)
DeleteMy brother's the best! :D
It looks like a great camera :) I completely understand your DSLR dilemma. I contemplated chucking aside my D40 and buying something small, more lady-like..then I went to a Nikon roadshow early last year and fell for the D7000. It's amazing. I don't use all it's features but it gives me such beautiful photographs that lugging it around is worth the discomfort (and pain..my neck hurts sometimes).
ReplyDeleteOooh, the D7000 is a gorgeous camera! I think I would love a DSLR one day, and of course I know the appeal of one, but seeing as I carry my camera with me at all times, it just wouldn't be the most convenient for me... But I really was debating whether I should get one. I ultimately decided that I wouldn't use it as much as a smaller camera. I think I would feel kind of uncomfortable carrying this massive DSLR with me to, like, a noodle shop, lol. :)
DeleteYayyy, welcome to the club! Lol. I just got one a few months ago and LOVE it. It's so compact and honestly, does as well as my DSLR for what I need it to do...which is take pics of food and makeup.
ReplyDeleteHaha, thank you, thank you. And that's pretty much all I take pictures of as well, lol! :) I love it!
Deletebeautiful!
ReplyDeleteI know, right?! :D
DeleteWhat a pretty camera!!! How's the quality? Are you gonna start using this camera to take pictures for this blog?
ReplyDeleteThe quality is fantastic -- in many ways, it's similar to a DSLR, in my opinion! And yep, I'm pretty much retiring my Canon point-and-shoot. :P
