Last Thursday, MAC released a new collection called Moody Blooms. This collection is inspired by "exotic flora exuding a hint of danger... a sensual hothouse of night-blooming flowers [that] sets the scene for seduction. In this garden of the night, moody blooms become the ultimate obsession... venomous violets, intoxicating ivy and poisonous nightshade glow with a phosphorescent gleam. As the blossoming buds unfurl into the darkness, electric colours emerge..." The entire collection features a total of 25 products — 12 of which are new and limited edition (of which one is an online exclusive), eight of which are re-promotes, and five of which are permanent. Moody Blooms will see the release of six shades of Sheen Supreme Lipstick; five are new and limited edition, and one is permanent. One shade, Venomous Violet, is an online exclusive, which I did not pick up and therefore will not be reviewed here. MAC describes the Sheen Supreme Lipstick as combining "the colour impact of a lipstick with the shine sheen of a Lipglass" and is touted to be "lightweight, non-sticky, slick to apply, and comfortable to wear." Each Sheen Supreme Lipstick comes in a regular glossy black cylindrical tube, contains 3.6 grams of product, and retails for $20. Due to the higher price point and different formulation, these are not applicable for the Back to MAC recycling program.
Phosphorescent, Pheromonal, Lust Extract, Quite the Thing!, and Moody Bloom
Phosphorescent, Pheromonal, Lust Extract, Quite the Thing!, and Moody Bloom
Phosphorescent is a medium-dark vibrant warm coral pink with a glossy sheen. This is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and semi-opaque to opaque buildable colour pay-off. It is brighter and more coral than Ultra Darling, more pink and more muted than Full Speed, and more muted and glossier than Lady at Play Mineralize Rich Lipstick.
Pheromonal is a medium-dark vibrant cool-toned hot pink with a glossy sheen. This is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and semi-opaque to opaque buildable colour pay-off. It is cooler than Insanely It, cooler and glossier than Speak Louder, and similar though glossier than Good Taste Mineralize Rich Lipstick.
Lust Extract is a medium-dark vibrant cool-toned fuchsia-magenta with a glossy sheen. This is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and semi-opaque to opaque buildable colour pay-off. It is lighter and brighter than Zen Rose, lighter and glossier than Love Forever! Pro Longwear Lipcreme, and slightly more pink than Bold Spring Mineralize Rich Lipstick.
Quite the Thing! is a medium-dark berry-plum with fuchsia shimmer and a glossy sheen. This is a permanent shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and semi-opaque to opaque buildable colour pay-off. It is lighter and more muted than Rebel and Lush Life Mineralize Rich Lipstick, and brighter and glossier than Captive.
Moody Bloom is a medium bronzed plum with bronze micro-shimmer and a glossy sheen. This is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque to opaque buildable colour pay-off. It is lighter and more bronze than Can't Resist, more bronze and glossier than Sequin, and more plum and glossier than Plastique.
Fans of the Sheen Supreme Lipstick can rejoice at new shade offerings here! I've always liked the Sheen Supreme formula — they are creamy and slick and moisturizing, comfortable to wear, and give off really gorgeous, saturated colour. And because it's a hybrid between lipstick, lip gloss, and lip balm, it's a really nice option for those who like a creamier lip colour that won't dry out lips. My only issue with the Sheen Supreme formula is the general wear-time, but I was pleasantly surprised that the four brighter shades in this launch wear a good three to four hours and actually leave a nice stain behind even after the glossy shine fades away (which makes the wear time appear even longer). All the shades launched with Moody Blooms will look good on all skintones while keeping in line with the "exotic flora" colour story. And these are great for those who wanted brighter, "juicier" lip options from MAC this summer.
I have one or two of these and am not really a fan - I feel like they also smell different than the usual MAC lipsticks? Or maybe I'm crazy. They're not really drying but I don't love any of the colors I have, I guess....so maybe that's it? LOL. But Lust Extract is super pretty! And now that my hair is darker again I can wear pink again, LOL.
They do smell somewhat different than the regular MAC lipsticks. They're both vanilla, but I find the Sheen Supreme ones to be stronger in scent.
Looool, which colours do you have? Do you not like the formula? Not everyone loves these, whether it's the creaminess or the shine or the longevity, etc.
If you like the shade of Lust Extract but don't like the formula, you should look into Love Forever! Pro Longwear Lipcreme or Bold Spring Mineralize Rich Lipstick. :)
I have to say Sheen Supremes aren't my faves either - I think the glossiness can turn out a bit patchy at times. Having said that, I still love the shit out of Zen Rose. :D Lust Extract also looks good to me here.
Haha, I agree, some of the Sheen Supremes don't sit as well on the lips. But they're so great for days where you just want an easy, low-maintenance lip that are comfortable to wear. I love my mattes, but they can be hell on the lips. I do prefer the more "natural" shades in this formula -- Bare Again, Ultra Darling, and Tea Ceremony are great go-to shades for off-key looks for me -- but the brighter shades are nice if you want a pop of colour that's still... casual. Lust Extract is my favourite from this collection! So glad your Zen Rose is still getting some love, though!
I haven't tried these before, but something about them doesn't call to me too much, for some reason? Though you mentioning the more natural shades makes me think I'd probably go for those. I think in this kinda squishy formula, natural is the way to go.
To be honest, I think there are so many lip products out there right now that these are bypassed for other brands with similar formulas (every brand has a lip balm-lipstick hybrid now). Still, it's nice if you like your lipsticks to be really creamy and moisturizing and shiny. The shade "Impressive" would look amazing with your skintone. :)
