Dining Out: The Banatella at Croffle House

The Banatella

Went to Croffle House with Minji and Daniel for a little dessert. In honour of Jungkook's birthday, I got the Banatella Croffle (banana and Nutella, if you couldn't tell by the name), dedicated to his love of banana milk. (Also because I just like the combination of banana and Nutella. But I'm sure he likes Nutella, right? Who doesn't like Nutella?) I said before, croffle > waffle > pancake, and this has only solidified my opinion. (I'm sure Jungkook would agree.)

Hong Kong 2024 Travel Log: Day 7 — West Coast Crêpe and HK Style French Toast Crêpe at Café Crêpe

on
Monday, March 25, 2024
Wanting some Western food for dinner, we decided to go to Café Crêpe. For those who have lived in Toronto in the last 20 years, you will know that we had our own Café Crêpe on Queen Street. It opened when I was in high school and I went there every time I ventured downtown (which was a lot, 'cause I used to go to a lot of local rock shows) and it was one of my restaurant staples well into university. It became a Queen Street icon. Except COVID happened. And then it permanently closed, after nearly two decades of business. But for some odd reason, their locations in Vancouver and Hong Kong remained opened. I didn't even know they had locations outside of Canada, but I FOUND ONE.

I decided to get the West Coast savoury crêpe (which has smoked salmon, cream cheese, red onion, spinach, and dill) because I didn't want something too heavy. It was good but I do think one of the other options with meat and cheese would've worked better with the sweetness of a crêpe. What was magical, though, was the HK Style French Toast sweet crêpe, which I assume is a Hong Kong exclusive item. Egg, peanut butter, sweetened condensed milk, maple syrup, and icing sugar — it tasted EXACTLY like HK-style French toast. It doesn't replace an actual HK-style French toast, mind you (it lacks, you know, the toast part), but it was good enough of a replacement that I felt like I ate one.

Dining Out: The Mangoffle at Croffle House

The Mangoffle

On a whim, a few friends and I decided to go to Croffle House for dessert. Since I am mango-biased, I went for the Mangoffle — two croffles with vanilla syrup, mangoes, and mango ice cream — and, in an unexpected turn of events, it has become my new favourite dessert. A controversial take, but croffle > cronut. Sorry, Dominique Ansel. (And an even more controversial take, croffle > waffle > pancake. Yeah, I went there. Fight me.)

Dining Out: A Contemporary French Birthday Dinner at Terre Rouge

on
Wednesday, November 15, 2023
What haven't I eaten recently? French food. So when my mom asked where I'd want to go for my birthday dinner, I decided to go with Terre Rouge. I originally wanted to do their tasting menu because I remember it being quite excellent, but unfortunately, they stopped offering it when the pandemic started (understandable) and never brought it back. So we moved on to the à la carte menu. Our choices:

Bistro salad with mixed greens, goat cheese, pickled red onions, cherry tomatoes, toasted walnuts, and lemon herb vinaigrette

Article Image
PEI mussels with white wine, garlic, and herb sauce

Coq au vin in red wine sauce with fingerling potatoes

Article Image
Duck confit with mixed green salad, orange vinaigrette, smoked duck bacon, roasted beets, and shaved fennel

The dishes we had this evening were decent — good flavours, not overly salted, nice presentation — but not particularly exciting or interesting. Their now-discontinued tasting menu was incredible and really showcased their culinary skills, and was the sole reason I would splurge there for special occasions. I'm not sure if this is a result of COVID or a change in management, but I sincerely hope they bring back some kind of tasting menu or chef's menu option. On that note, I love that I can use my birthday as an excuse to eat everything I want. Perhaps I shall expand my birthday week into birthday month...

My friend Maegan got me some macarons from Ladurée, all neatly tucked in their annual limited edition Christmas box! Inside? Two seasonal flavours in Camerise (kind of like a cross between blueberry and blackcurrant) and Pecan Maple Syrup, two of my favourite classic flavours in Salted Caramel and Pistachio, and four flavours from their limited edition chocolate-dipped series: raspberry with dark chocolate, lemon with dark chocolate, chocolate with dark chocolate, and chocolate with milk chocolate. What a delightfully decadent Christmas gift! 'Cause nothing says Christmas like sugar dipped in more sugar, right?

As per tradition, a tasting menu for my birthday with Ronsee (this is his birthday gift to me every year). This year's choice? Edulis, where we had a gorgeous, four-hour, 10+ course, seafood-based meal. They offer a five-course or seven-course tasting menu with a select few seasonal options as add-ons, so we went for the seven-course and added two Canapés of White Truffle with Porcini Tartufata ($35 each) as it's apparently white truffle season (we couldn't not take part in this), and the Jamón Joselito Gran Reserva 2015 Hand Sliced Ham ($50 per plate) to share. Every single dish was incredible and beautifully presented, but standouts for me were the Canapé of White Truffle with Porcini Tartufata, the New Zealand short-fin eel with broccolini pistachio tartare, the Portuguese squid cooked over charcoal in squid ink onion stew with almonds, and the Quince and apple sorbet with roasted apple and pumpkin seeds. Just amazing combinations of flavours, textures, and aromas.

The space itself is quite small — a single main floor dining room only holds about 30 people — but it is intimate and cozy without feeling too stuffy. For a restaurant that only serves tasting menus and is considered one of the best in the world, Edulis is incredibly modest, down-to-earth, and almost casual. Our server was super-nice, accommodating, knowledgeable, and never once interrupted our conversation. She refilled both our water glasses and carafe regularly so they were never empty, and always asked how our dishes were every time she came to pick up the plates when our courses were done. My only real complaint is that it's just a bit too dark in there (the servers literally have to use flashlights to read labels behind the bar, plus any and all pictures taken here are going to be grainy as hell as you can plainly see), but it's a wonderful experience that both Ronsee and I thought was well worth the price. They're not the #7 best restaurant in Canada for nothing.

Ronsee went to Montreal this week and brought me back some macarons from Maison Christian Faure! A box of 10 flavours: Coconut (which I ate before I took the photos), vanilla, mango-passion fruit, caramel, raspberry (x2), blackcurrant, chocolate (x2), praline, lemon, and pistachio. I was feeling quite down this week, so this was a particularly lovely surprise.

My mom wanted to take me out for a birthday dinner, so we decided on the tasting menu (yes, another one) at Terre Rouge:

I actually took my mom here for her birthday in February, but they have changed up the menu since our previous trip, so the majority of the dishes this time were new. What I love about tasting menus is that each dish is really like edible art and it's always interesting to see how chefs decide to plate and decorate the food. In general, Terre Rouge does their plating really well. Winners for me this time were the miso black cod and the lobster tacos. The wagyu beef was good, but not really worth the $40 upgrade price (it's $69 on its own from the à la carte menu); while it was a good piece of steak, nothing about it really stood out to me as wagyu as compared to other types of beef in terms of flavour, texture, or marbling. And the scallop carpaccio was good, but nothing really special in the flavour profile. I thought the scallops we had last time were better executed. Still, it was a fantastic dinner, and our server was very nice, informative, and efficient, and even the manager stopped by to chat with us to ask how the food was and briefly explained why each dish contained certain ingredients or flavours. I've yet to have a bad experience at Terre Rouge, really. I should really try what they have to offer from their regular menu at some point.

It has been a long day, but in the best way possible. Because today, I went to the BTS concert in Hamilton. I got up at 5:30 AM this morning to meet Ronsee for 7:30 AM, got some breakfast at McDonald's, withdrew cash from the ATM, and we got to Hamilton by 8:45 AM. By the time we parked, the line-up for GA wristbands already had 900 to 1,000 people and spanned about three intersections. Thankfully, we didn't have GA tickets so we didn't have to get in that line-up. The reason I actually wanted to get there so early was for the merch booths, which opened at 9:00 AM. Of course, by the time we got there, there were already hundreds of people in line. We lined up for about two hours before we got to the tents but a lot of merch had already sold out by then. There were a lot of things I didn't care for like the pickets or garland or ball cap or stickers, but I did want the zip-up hoodie and the black tee, and all the clothing items were sold out within the first hour. I did manage to get the program book and the poster set, though, which are two of the four items I wanted.

After we got out of the merch area, I went to get my wristband for soundcheck. The line-up for soundcheck started at 1:00 PM, so after getting a coffee and having a few smokes, I parted ways with Ronsee. As it turns out, the soundcheck line-up was organized by wristband number, so the earlier you got your wristband, the further up in line you got. It's more tedious for security, but I appreciate this kind of organization because there's no fighting or cutting in line. (There's supposed to be 500 soundcheck winners per concert date, but there was maybe 250 to 300 at most for today's soundcheck. I'm guessing this is due a huge number of tickets being bought by scalpers and resellers — only the original buyer of the tickets is entered to win soundcheck.) They started letting us into the venue at around 2:00 PM for bag checks. There was a very strict no camera/cell phone policy for the soundcheck (cameras got confiscated, anyway, because they're forbidden at all BTS concerts, but the security told us if they caught anyone taking out a cell phone, they would not only escort us out of soundcheck, but also not permit entry to the concert later on) which is why there's no fan footage of soundchecks from any of the tour dates (understandable, because it's a private performance for the soundcheck winners). All you gotta know is that it was the most surreal experience I have ever had in my life, that these seven boys that I have watched through the screen for so, so long was literally less than 10 feet away from me. And let me tell you, without any makeup on and in casual streetwear, they are even more beautiful in person (I didn't think that was possible).

The soundcheck was about 20 minutes long. They played three songs — "Fake Love," "Airplane, Pt. 2," and "Anpanman" — and I swear to you, Jungkook and Suga looked me directly in the eye at least once each. I could be mistaken, of course, because I guess it's every fan's fantasy to have their idols notice them, and even as I'm typing this out, I can feel an eye roll coming on. But I was standing a bit further behind everyone else because I wanted a better view of all the boys, and there was a gap between the people standing in front of me so there was a very clear view path between me and the stage. I mean, they could've been staring at the empty space behind me, but I somehow doubt it. I just distinctly remember the few moments that made the soundcheck so surreal to me. The first moment was when they came out from the side stage and were walking down the plank towards us, and I thought, "Whoa, they're actually real! And their skin looks so good!" The second moment was when Jungkook came over to our side of the stage to greet all the fans and looked me in the eye and smiled, and I thought, "He might have the nicest smile I have ever seen in real life," which was followed by, "HE IS TOO YOUNG FOR YOU." The third moment was when Suga came over to our side of the stage, and I thought, "Whoa, he doesn't have a mouth mask on!" followed by, "Hey, we have similar outfits on!" So, yeah. As I said, surreal.

When soundcheck was over, I found Ronsee in my car and we decided to search for a restaurant to eat lunch. We walked down King William Street and finally decided on a place called The French. It was already 3:30 PM by the time we got there so they were only serving their snack menu, but I got the steak frites (the only item on the snack menu that was an actual meal) and it was quite delightful. Kinda makes me bummed that we missed out on their regular menu, though, 'cause based on their steak frites alone, I think the rest of their menu would be phenomenal.

The concert started at 6:00 PM, but there was already quite a line-up to get into the venue for non-GA ticket holders, so we lined up at 4:45 and got to our seats for 5:15. Fans were already deafeningly loud while watching the BTS music videos that were streaming before the show started. I will post photos from the concert in separate posts (I went a little overboard and took over 1,000 photos on my iPhone so I have to sort through them), but here's the banner from tonight's concert. Every concert date has their own banner (BigHit has to officially approve these banners, then the banners are printed and shipped to the venues for their respective concert dates, and the venue organizers leave one in every seat and hand them to all GA ticket holders upon entry), but the banners for the Hamilton shows were organized by BTS Canada and BTS Canada Projects and funded solely by the fans (I donated $100 to the Hamilton project). Tonight's banner said, "So thank you for becoming my light, the flower in the most beautiful moment in life," in reference to their fan song, "2! 3!" which holds so much meaning for BTS and ARMY. (Here's BTS with tonight's banner. And J-Hope loved it so much, he posted a selfie with it.)

I made a trip to Yorkdale Mall, an occurrence that happens maybe two to three times a year, so you know I had to get some macarons at Ladurée (it's one of three locations in Canada, and the only location in Toronto). I got three seasonal flavours — Lavender Chocolate, Pineapple, and Coconut Lime — and then five favourites from the classic line-up: Pistachio, Lemon, Coffee, Salted Caramel, and Strawberry Marshmallow Candy. I had to get one of those cute collectible boxes, too, 'cause if I'm gonna be a basic bitch and take photos of my Ladurée macarons to post on social media, I gotta go all the way.

Took my mom out for her birthday dinner at Terre Rouge, which I've been wanting to try for a few months now. We decided to indulge in the tasting menu tonight, $85 a head:

  1. Amuse-bouche: Tuna tataki, scallop ceviche with lime, and sea urchin with yuzu jelly
  2. Scallops with jasmine sea salt emulsion, quinoa, and sweet peas
  3. Seared foie gras with apple mustarda, passionfruit, and breadcrumbs
  4. Mushroom risotto with black truffle and mustard greens
  5. Halibut with ginger beurre blanc, chickpeas, butter beans, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes
  6. Duck leg with whipped potatoes and barley, charred corn, and beer foam
  7. Molten lava cake with vanilla bean ice cream and chocolate crumble

Delicious flavour palates, beautiful presentation, and excellent service. My mom and I both thoroughly enjoyed every dish and thought the tasting menu was entirely worth it. It's French cuisine, so everything was quite rich (read: fattening) despite the smallish portions, but it's a really nice treat for a special occasion. Will definitely return!
